I could post on one of the other Fora ( or is it Forums); but think that may be more sense here.
Have read that a boat has bad luck if the name is changed. The boat I bought in this spring had her name changed.
I have no way of asking previous owner if he sacrificed to the Gods when he changed the name to offset any bad luck as the only river he maybe sailing on is the Styx, unless there is other water in the area he has gone to that we do not know of.
For me there are three options, change name back to original , keep name or change name again.
If I change back to original is that bad luck as is a name change?
As bought boat with name attached should I be worried ?
Changing name again , can I be sure that the Gods will not be offended.

If you change it back that will be two name changes, so twice the bad luck.

I'd leave it as it is and send me £50 as a Paypal gift and i will say a special name changing good luck chant for you and you will have nothing to worry about. If you do decide to change it back, that'll obviously be a £100 Paypal gift :encouragement:

Regret I fell out with Paypall /Fleebay when they refunded without asking me first.
Got the money back; but was a challenge .
So regret any payments will have to be in Gold coins and think that Tesco mayn't have them in stock for another week or two.

Don't be silly ...... I've changed names of many of my boats over the years.

As far as I can tell, nothing bad has happened as a result.

I also make a point of walking under ladders, whenever the opportunity arises.

My understanding is that if a boat is sunk, then refloated, the name may be changed without attracting the customary bad luck, but otherwise you must expect it. Our current boat spent some time in Dutch waters where she acquired a Dutch name (her second or third name). The owner before us bought her in Holland and sailed to Gareloch with his father, that passage prompting him to rename her "Never Again". We were not happy to live with that name so changed again to "Wild Thyme", after so many name changes, we figured her luck could not get worse, so we didn't bother with the sinking refloating ritual and she's looked after us well ever since.

The ceremony involves consuming a large quantity of alcohol, so what's not to like about it?

If you do change the name make sure you never carry on board:
Bananas
Umbrellas
Royal Naval Officers, or
Women.

Never leave on a Friday and never mention Pigs* whilst on board. I understand that to be absolutely certain that the only animal whose name may be used whilst on board is 'Horse' and that is because a boat has one, or at least old boats had them. It is acceptable to talk about salt pork and salt beef though.

*There is an excellent book called 'The English Passenger' by Matthew Kneale where a Manx smuggler explains in detail why he had such bad luck when a minister of religion he was carrying from one port to another mentioned the word 'pig'.

That's me sunk then! Or do Lay Ministers not count? I'm married, and my wife is my usual crew. That's two strikes. We often carry bananas (3) and have an umbrella aboard (4). I can't recall ever having any occasion to mention pigs, though, and I'm not aware of ever having had a naval officer aboard.

Should I simply call the CG before bothering to leave my berth? :D

To revert to the OP's question, Capricious had another name (I forget what) under her first owner. The name was one strongly associated with that owner, and I understand it was a condition of sale that the name be changed when she was sold. Conditions regarding names aren't that unusual, if a name has a particular association with the owner.

Like religion... you pays your money and takes your choice.

What ceremony or ritual would make you happiest? or none?

We have changed the name on both the sailing yachts that we have had.

Our first boat was originally called Charley farley and we renamed her Mariadz. When we bought the moody she was called Alice (Alice? Who the f@€# is Alice). We swapped names and felt very sorry for the dufour becoming Alice.

Neptune has joined us for a drink on both occasions. Actually on the dufour we were lucky enough to have the vicar who we about to marry us do a little ceremony for us - she was brilliant and really researched it.

Both boats have always looked after us so the name change didn't seem to cause a problem.

No such thing as bad luck! We all make our own luck in this world, just make sure you know what you are doing in everything you tackle about the boat and everything you do when navigating your boat! Don’t leave anything to luck!! Because that’s when Sod’s law take over!
