Last week there was a conference to discuss the introduction to the change of format for the VHF operators licence. The changes are significant and have been imposed upon us by our European partners so before folk start having a go at the MCA, the RYA or RYA training centres please stay focused on the issue. :cool:

Every bit of operational research says that fatigue is the premier cause of funk-ups in the cockpit, just like the same causes merchant vessels to pile up beaches and into each other on a monotonously regular basis because the solitary bridge watchkeeper is inspecting the inside of his eyelids. This knowledge hasn't stopped the EU agreeing to 'harmonisation' to the lowest common denominator.

That system has been in ROI for years and had nothing to do with EUcrats. ISA Course providers train and the state has always examined. It's better because commercial course providers have no part in the exam process, it is fully independent, so there are failures albeit at a very low rate, which means a better and fairer standard. It is a pita because it does take longer than the RYA course and costs more due to the exam fee. An official from the govt marine dept examines candidates. I hold both an RYA cert and an ROI SRC cert. I have never heard of anybody in ROI failing the exam at the end of RYA courses delivered in Ireland. (Ie need for more separation between game keeper and poachers roles if you forgive the analogy). IMHO the RYA course content is better but always felt despite the inconveinience that the exam process should have been independent.

Must be a cynical comment.. marine VHF operation in Spain is a joke, mostly the British operators follow correct procedure, Spanish & many others don't even know what the procedure is, let alone use it!

In the Uk we use the EU excuse for all the slavish increase in bureaucratic nonsense, imo there was nothing wrong with the RYA system, at least we make an attempt at using what has been taught after. No doubt the MCA will be delighted at another step towards regulating & restricting pleasure use of boats!… Hmmm feel better to get that off my chest :)
