I took my 11yr old 4 man canister liferaft to ADEC today for servicing. Three yearly job but I have missed the odd year.

I was told by the guy who took it that "you'll only get one more year out of that because they all have to be ISOwhatever compliant from 2019".

I have yet to get hold of the manager to find out if they will only give it a one year certificate or if he is talking about it being fit for coding (not an issue) or acceptable in foreign parts where they care about these things.

If they will service it then I'll happily tote it around for another three or four years in the knowledge that it will work as long as Europlod doesn't object.

Any knowledge folks? Be nice to know what is going on before they try to sell or hire me one. Off to Holland in May for 4 weeks so service and hire costs are likely to be similar.

as i understand it, its 3 yrs service >12 yrs then annual after that.many yrs ago my BFA was 20 yrs old & still good

Looks like my 1991 vintage Avon which was last tested in 1993 might fall foul of that rule then.

I do appreciate safety at sea in all other things, and if I go offshore then I will have an in-date life raft, but this smacks of yet more bureaucratic interference in pleasure boating. I personally get a bit fed up with Governments concerning themselves with my safety. If I pass due to my own short sightedness the Government saves having to pay my pension in a few years time.

Had mine done at ADEC 12 months ago, this wasn't mentioned then. Certainly first I've heard of it. Perhaps speak to their main office in Bromley, Roger?

Is it a racing thing, maybe? I know there was a grace period for boats with older liferafts before they had to comply with safety standards in the racing rules; maybe that period is about to expire?

Just to wrap this up.

I spoke to the manager. The new ISO regs only relate to charter boats and not to private craft. It will get a three year certificate.

The service, dependent on what needs replacing is about £160. A new cylinder would be £150 :nonchalance: They are supposed to pressure test the cylinder after ten years but he said he will exam and weigh it and certify that it will go off when/if I need it to.:encouragement:

I asked him how long it would last before needing replacement and he said it should last forever. I hope that I might.

Phew that's a relief, thanks for getting it clarified.
I have always found the chap at ADEC to be very helpful and reasonable, always willing to discuss options. I'd managed to smash the canister on mine last time round - dropped it off the boat onto the ground :disgust: - and he sourced a second hand one for a very reasonable price.
