A long shot but has anyone bought chain from this source? :

8mm Grade 40 Calibrated Galvanised Chain - Mooring & Anchoring - Windlass | eBay

I believe you don't always get what you pay for.... It's 25% cheaper than some offerings. Thanks.
I see the importer is William Hackett. They are one of the biggest importers from top Chinese manufacturers and batch test what they buy. It should be top quality but ask for a certificate. The Grade 40 claim may not be what the certificate says unless the Chinese have made a few changes, although its strength may well be to that standard.

Got mine from here 30mtr x 8mm Calibrated Hot Dipped Galvanised Chain - Marine Scene where at the moment they are doing a 7% off offer and when I bought mine it was free delivery too. Still looking good after 3 years. The chain arrived with a label in the box saying had been supplied by Seago.

Not bought from them but it’s cheaper at my local chandler in Lymington!

A good point, if you can find a chandler with old stock it can be a bargain.

Thanks for that Viv, I will contact them about certification. I could not see the bit about the importer, if you have time could you let me know where it is?

There is actually only restricted reasons why old stock should be cheaper.

Chain in a retail outlet should not deteriorate, unless it is stored outside in unsealed drums. If it is a short length - the retailer might want rid but otherwise I cannot think of any reason to cut a price. Having said that if it is uncertifcated then the chandler should not have it anyway. Demand a copy of the certificate - it might make chandlers lift their game.

Check Vyv's website - the life of the chain is a function of how much you use it and the quality of the galvanising. Vyv has a good means to check some parts of galvanising quality - do it!

It does not matter how strong the chain is if the gal only lasts 12 months.

G40 chain galvanising should be no, or little, different to G30 galvanising - strength will not allow it to last longer - don't be beguiled by strength. Hackett are highly reputable - they will have the answers.....

I think it is more likely that some retailers only update their prices when they receive new stock, so if they have old stock they may still be selling it for less than it would cost them to replace it.

Another vote for Marine Scene, although I don't know the grade of their chain. I have bought a lot from them in the past, particularly offcut rope. Yesterday I bought an ex display Lewmar 15ST, enough 10mm Liros for 3 halyards, 8mm for reefing lines and 12mm 3 strand for 4 mooring warps for £530 with free delivery, which is less than the retail price for the winch alone.

Obvious point to make, but do check delivery charges. My local chandler's quote matched other cheaper outlets when these were taken into account. And he ordered it in specially for me

I have decided to order the chain from BCL. They responded to my email very quickly, can supply a 40 metre length, are happy to include a certificate and suitable shackle. I will report back for good or ill.
Carriage is £55.

You must anchor in shallow water with little tide or benign conditions if you only need 40m, or maybe its a mixed rode? Be cautious of the suitable shackle - I am sure it will fit the chain - but does it fit the anchor without binding?

I have just taken delivery of the chain, got here in under two days. Good people to deal with, supplied the certificate as promised and a suitable shackle FOC. Ordered direct 8mm @ £6.20 per metre.

It looks smooth and well finished, however the proof of the pudding etc. I think viv-cox once said you can only expect 3 years, or so, out of new chain before the rust starts to show, so I will see how it does.

I think if 3 years means 1,000/1200 nights at anchor you will be happy.
