CG66 scheme closing down?

As I read it, the Safetrx system is NOT valid for tablet-type devices - only iPhones and Android4.0+ Smartphones equivalents..... and that remains to be seen ( or not ). Other makes? Forget it.

If the tracking feature is used, one's data is shared via Google Positions with everyone and anyone who has the URL. I can foresee scrotes using this. 'GPRD privacy' anyone? And as has been mentioned, should you be out of cell-range ( not only the Wild West Coast of Scotland ), it no workee......

Of course, once one is registered on the system, one opens the digital doors to all sorts of unwanted push-ads, eating into data allowances and battery life.

Not for me.

It won't load on my android tablet, on the pc I got to this bit on the registration form and gave up. And why do they want my vehicle details?
Your email is mandatory and essential for communicating to you in distress and assistance circumstances.

Simples. Boat reported missing, your shore contact said Johnny drove to the sailing club, CG/Police check the club car park and not car there. Have you done a Reggy Perrin?

Or if they find the car there and boat not there, it's pretty good evidence you *are* at sea and potentially in real trouble. Useful information. (Although probably less useful to have it on a database rather than asking the person who say's you've driven to the carpark what car you were driving as few will remember to update when they change cars, or record every car they have access to.)

I am generally supportive of the RYA. But in this case RYA gets zero points for total lack of consultation with members before making the giant leap to supersede the official CG66 database.
And RYA have minimal experience of IT systems, data security etc. Whilst it might be a reasonable proposal, there are a myriad of important questions about the proposed approach before I would be happy to recommend it if I had been involved. None of these questions are addressed even in part by either announcement.

And so now a third party app developer (and unknown other third parties) has control over all of our confidential data, if we want to make this still available to the MCA for an emergency.
A premature decision ahead of any informed consultation

I am adding the "standing data" and not using the voyage information stuff, usually I am out of range of a mobile phone mast. Should I need to hit the wee button the CG have the info about the boat, my VHF call for help and my AIS track.

Safetrx does not work on my Android 4.1.2 phone and Samsung has no intention of issuing an Android update. It used to work on my phone but then the RYA made an 'improvement' to Safetrx that was not backwards compatible with earlier Android versions, despite the website saying it worked on 4.0 and above A post above said: "And RYA have minimal experience of IT systems" - how true!

I meandered onto the SafeTRX developer's site ........
A future avenue for SafeTrx is a collaboration with another Irish start-up called DroneSAR, led by Oisin McGrath.

The plan is to develop systems whereby if ships or yachts are in trouble, or don’t reach a particular rendezvous point, drones will be automatically dispatched to find the vessels, record in 4K and even deliver medical supplies.

Where's my tin-foil hat?

Just downloaded the app and had a look at the web page access. I've recorded my boat details, nothing remarkable in what they asked. There is, to my mind, a reasonable requirement for email, postal address and contact phone number as well as a emergency contact person. If you want, you can enter your vehicle details but it is optional. So far, so CG66. It's a database with your details, boat details and emergency contact details. CG and SAR people will have access to it, the Eula says that's it apart from annonimised trip data.

You don't need to use the app if you just want to replicate what CG66 did: just go online to the webpage and complete the data entry. End of. If you'd like to use the app as a means of letting the CG know what you're up to, then go ahead. I won't be but that's mainly 'cos this boat's in Greece.... When I'm in UK, I'll also input the Hurley's details and I will probably use the app.

+1 agree. I have done the same using the web access on my tablet. It will be important to enter all your boat, contact details and emergency contacts before the CG66 system is turned off so might as well do it now.

I've just done the online jobbie. They can spell colour for the Deck but not Hull, Hull bottom and Top ;)

For some reason the pic isn't uploading, well not showing. IIRC this was the same on the CG66 site for me.

I just registered an EPIRB and whilst completing the MCA online form came across a box asking for my CG66 reference number.

Easy I thought. A quick search of emails and I found an old CG66 email with a link in it so used that to try and check/update my CG66 details.

I was redirected to the SafeTRX website and realised from then on that CG66 is well and truly in the past.
https://www.rya.org.uk/newsevents/news/Pages/safetrx-CG66-launch.aspx

The registration didn't appear to have any of my CG66 details in it.. No contacts, no vessel name and no photo so I've uploaded them all again.

Looks like there is an associated App (which I don't currently plan to install) but seems like there is some sort of tracking built in.. Hopefully tracking only starts when you have the app and say you're actually out sailing..

Oh and back to the EPIRB registration - I never found a CG66 reference and SafeTRX didn't give me one either. I sent a message asking about this (via the SafeTRX website) so we'll see if one does get issued.

This is obviously something dreamed up by someone who thinks that we all have access to the Internet. Sailing on the West Coast, sometimes we do, often we don't. This App will be of no use to me.

I have the same problem on the south coast with EE. Bucklers Hard is also a unreliable signal area unless in the Master Builder !

CG66 is not closing down. The Safetrx app as I understand it is simply to record your passages. The CG do nothing with the info if you radio in unless actually in some kind of trouble, as have better things to do than to track many thousands of boats trundling round between ports to make sure they all arrive. I wont bother with the app. However if my vessel is reported missing the CG66 form enable a proper search etc and has just registered my new boat
