CETREK INSTRUMENTS-a cautionary tale

Four years ago I purchased a new CETREK ANALOGUE WIND INSTRUMENT from the makers, at the Southampton boat show. A week ago the masthead sensor was damaged during mast handling which left two wires hanging out of the top cover of the anenometer.

Being a practical person I decided that it shouldn't take much to solder the two wires back in place. The only problem was that there were several places to which the wires could have been attached, so I telephoned CETREK for advice. A detailed close-up photo was sent via E-mail to expedite matters and acknowledged.

A week later when no news was forthcoming, I telephoned the technical department again only to be told that parts were not available and they had no circuit diagram for this unit !

I was then told to contact VETUS (UK)who were the actual makers of the unit only to be told by VETUS- NO, CETREK still had the warrant for this equipment and that they must have the circuit diagrams for it. Back I go to CETREK - and apparently they telephone VETUS (UK) and CETREK now tell me to phone VETUS(HOLLAND) and generously provide me with the telephone number.

TO-day i telephoned VETUS(HOLLAND) and speak to their top man - BEN VOS, and he insists he knows nothing of this instrument and he did not manufacture it !

Back to CETREK again -"don't understand this says ROBERT NIKOS of their technical support team,( but he is very helpful in sponsoring a local shop to do the repair )and tells me to post it to GOLDENARROW in DORSET, PAY THE INSPECTION FEE, and if it is found to be beyond economic repair he kindly suggests that he could do me a good deal on their latest model wind instrument.

My advice to anyone buying such expensive kit is clear -THINK TWICE BEFORE BUYING - there are lots of alternative makers, some I'M SURE, who will not LEAVE YOU HIGH AND DRY as I have been.

would this be of help??

If you are looking to replace it, then consider Raytheon. I've never had a problem getting spares for my customers and also service manuals on certain products.

If you would like our workshop to have a look at it and quote FOC, then drop me a mail and we can have a go at sorting it.
