Centaur prices

I would far rather work the DW magic to add a mast and rig-and a couple of cast-off sails- and have sommat sellable at the end-than mess around with grinders keelbolts and rudders.

But I agree, an old Volvo is just the recurrent nightmare. Perhaps some sort of Swedish counselling or at least a Swedish massage is required to rid Dylan of these pestiliential Volvic dreams?

the stern is wrong

the woman on the phone said it was a centaur

I am not sure they take brokerage very seriously

the boat looks in great nick for 3K though

31 footer with a functioning engine but no rig for 3K

if I can find a Centaur in such good cosmetic nick but with a rig and a jiggered engine I will be well pleased

Yeah its a 31 footer alright (grab handles on the forecabin)

Three grand for a Berwick/Longbow , christ!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i've seen it all, the cheapest i'd seen was an early one (1971) with the different windows and blisters the size of your hand on the hull and that was up for £8950, i heard it sold for a little less, admittedly this hasn't got a rig but even so.

You could only buy that on the basis that you were prepared to wait a long time for the right rig to turn up (assuming it is lost). Buying new I doubt you'd get much change from 6 grand (mast, standing rigging, running rigging, boom, furler, kicker, sails, masthead lights etc.

You could hit ebay and the boat jumbles but it's a bit of a gamble...you'd certainly need new standing rigging (£1k) so even being thrifty and patient I'd doubt you'd see much change from £2.5k...

I agree about the cost of re-masting, re-rigging and re-sailing her

friggin waste of a good boat

and then the engine is likely to be at best ancient and at worst jiggered

as for something as small as treadmaster killing the sale....

I presume it will end up as a live-aboard

Someone was onboard viewing it when I left the marina. I noticed the deck is all treadmaster, not keen on that.

It seems to be a very "Westerley" thing to do. Whether in the presence of modern grippy footwear, increased maintenance, lots of weight, and more difficulty to clean, it actually has any place on today's boat is questionable...but it does look OK on that style of boat IMHO.

Just not light blue though!

When i first started looking around for a new stick for mine, nobody was interested in supplying me a kit that i could build myself like i 'd previously done with the family 505 in the late '80's and the cheapest quote i got in 2006 for the Centaur was £5500, (mast, boom, vang and standing rigging) the dearest over £10000 all i'll say is its amazing what a recession can do for people senses. I took numerous calls around 2008 - 2009 from suppliers i'd contacted years before who were previously aloof now bending over backwards to want to supply me the full kit and kaboodle for my Centaur.

In fairness although zspars wouldn't do me a kit at the time they were one of the more sensible price-wise; it was them and a company in plymouth IIRC, but if you now go to zpsars site they offer a mast, boom and standing rigging to suit a 26ft boat for around £3000, still tempted although theres nothing essentially wrong with my old Proctor stick that a coat of paint and re-rigging wouldn't put right. Plus since my rigs a bit of an experiment i'd rather snap an old mast than a brand new one.

Funnily enough when a centaur owner snapped his mast a year or two back i think two secondhand ones were offered on the WOA forum, so you could get lucky but i think the £6000 you mention is an accurate cost based on my own experiences, having totted up nearly £1800 in sta-lok fittings / wire / mast fittings / spreaders /electrics etc.

£3k is an outrageous bargain. I was quoted £2500 at the depths of the recession for a new mast for the Kipper but the survey said it was fine. You'd certainly get sorted for £4.5k inc the wire. Then the engine is about £7k including fitting. That then makes it £15k and it no longer seems like a bargain for a 43 year old boat with no aft cabin, one heads, big marina bills and a depreciating value.

I know they're an acquired taste these old boats but even £20k for something that can arguebly take you around the world is still a bargain relative to what you'd need to spend on something modern although i fully understand the economics of the arguement.

Definitely a Berwick (or Longbow if it's fin keeled). These are very much a 'big Centaur' and had a similar hp engine when new.. I reckon an ideal candidate for a well conversion and would cope with the big crew for Scotland.

Just saying..

Edit.. I see the broker I selling it as a Pentland, the aft cabin version

I think a number of centaurs get sold from club notice boards - certainly at Marconi it's very common for a boat (particularly a nicely maintained one) to stay within the sailing club for many years.

I know it's shoe leather, but a day trawling sailing club notice boards may turn up something...

Could be great for someone who has just found structural problems on the Centaur with a good rig into which he put a new engine two years ago - i.e. as a spare part rather than as a boat.

There's a Pentland ketch with in ALL roller reefing - Genny, plus main & mizzen "in mast" and I think it has radar & a doghouse - going for about 10K at our club. Frightened the life out of me; it's got more kit than SR, but has hardly been used for years, which is not always a "good thing" for elderly boats with lots of gear.

I sailed a Longbow out to the Carib and back home. Great boats, very seaworthy, reasonably fast and I'd snap Tamarind up if I wasn't already burdened with my Vancouver. I'm fairly sure you'd find the correct sized spars lying around in sme boatyard quite easily or on eBay, I wouldn't expect to pay more than a couple of hundred quid for spars. I personally wouldn't worry about the age of the engine, those MD11c engines are virtually indestructible and if it starts and runs on inspection then it'll be good for a few more years though if it doesn't, then it's not worth spending money on. It's a bargain and with twice the space of a Centaur.
