Centaur prices

Errr, no. It was Britain's biggest selling yacht, thus - arguably - Britain's most popular yacht. In the same way that the M25 is Britain's most popular motorway.

So, out of interest, what went wrong. Why was it not updated developed. A bit like Leisure Yachts. Lots about now the company gone. I have one and its a great little yacht.........

The Centaur sold 2,500 over 12 years, but by 1979 it was beginning to look rather dated, so Westerly commissioned Ed Dubois to design a replacement - which was quite a shck at the time. The replacement was the Griffon, a very nice boat indeed which sold 329 over just two or three years, but unfortunately bankrupted Westerly with rectification work on weak bilge keel stubs. Plus ça change.

Meanwhile the big French makers were gearing up for mass production on a scale which made a few hundred boats per year seem like chickenfeed.

not sure

is there anything else from the UK that comes anywhere near close?

the latest lead is an old Centaur in Tollesbury Essex

It has bent stanchions and is in, I believe, a place called Dougie's Yard.

Has anyone any knowledge of the boat?

I looked at the Centaur but thought they were generally over priced, so I got the best Macwester 27 that I could find.
Same idea, built like a brick outhouse, bilge keels, old Volvo and it sails quite well. Don't be put off the Macwester 27 by the reputation of the earlier 26 which was a drifter.

Snow is forecast tonight from Virginia to Massacusetts. Perhaps there will be enough extra YouTube views for you to upgrade your aspirations to a Centaur with a servicable engine. You could still bolt a bracket to the transom to take an outboard in an emergency.

That would be so wonderful - 30 milion youtube hits would have bought me a wonderful boat.... sadly.....

+1 We had the 28 and it sailed rather well. They go for silly cheap money, nice one in our yard with one year old Beta -£5k selling price.

The pedestal is bound to get in the way of any mods to the back end of the cockpit, a well for example.

A 4 berth Centaur is the C layout. There again, it may not be 4 berth, it may not be anywhere near Leeds, it may not exist.

Isn't Leeds Castle somewhere in the bad lands darn sarf?

Just looked at the pix for the latest revelation…

Strikes me that the lump of green metal as well as being a means of propulsion (or not) may also form a substantial part of the ballast, helping keep the beastie on its feet.

If removed, should some compensating weight be added low down?

Not unknown in other boat worlds (RHIBs etc) to get an add lifted from Ebay and posted on B&O often at a cheaper price (I know thats not the case this time) and why you ask to view they will arrange shipping, they are not available to view, they just moved to Scotland, they will ship to you leave it with you for 14days to approve and if you don't like it you get your ££ back. Or have the Leeds guys picked up the listing on B&O? That makes more sense. Who wants a boat in Leeds! Not a lot of Sea...

All nonsense scam.

Other possibility if someone bought the Leeds boat £3k, moved it to Essex (as has been commented thats £1.5k), paid storage ?£500, Spent some money fixing things etc. Maybe he's spent £6k so far. He instructs a broker he wants £6k back. Broker suggests listing for higher to bargain down...

it sound like the scam one, I was buying a boat 2 weeks back that was a scam , you will only get caught out if you are silly.
don't pay anything until you have seen some paper trail the boat ect The add was a copy of a boat for sale last year they dropped the price by 40% and wait for people to bite , when contact by email or phone them ask some questions only a boat owner might answer the way you would expect because these people will come out with some real s$"t I was told it wold be posted it to me and they would collect it and give full refund if it was not as expected and I was not happy , so £1500 to send it to me £ 1500 to pay the return on a £ 5000 boat , first alarm BTW he also had some nice cheap vans and cars I played them along a bit and passed it on to Ebay and now we have one less low life out their
