Centaur prices

Oh, C'mon, Chris, this is Dylan, he's Medja, don't mention the W**k word, and as for the G-word, and common sense, it would interfere with the Saga/current tale of woe write up/ video/dvd. :biggrin-new:
Saw and d/w enough of them in my last posting before retirement, just let him get on with it, not worth powder and shot-:devilish:

How are things?
Dick

Hey Dick, I'm housebound having pulled the ligaments off my bone pushing the boat around on the drive - pillock!

Wanna swap jobs Dylan, you can take on my clients for two months until I am back on my feet and I'll write your articles but would want more than £75 a pop. Get your hair cut and get a proper job ;).

Seriously good luck with the hunt and don't be afraid of putting silly offers in. Some folks accept them every now and then. You sometimes get the old boy who can no longer sail that doesn't want the hassle of selling, doesn't need the money but more importantly wants it go to a good home. I've had a few lucky buys like that with cars after promising I would invest in the car to keep it in tip top nick which I have.

A friend of mine recently picked up a 5 year old mint Shrimper for 15K, it was owned by a chap who unfortunately was on his way out. The boat was hardly used and he kept it in his garage and treated it like a classic car. He wasn't worried about money but wanted it to go to a good home. My friend realised he had bought it very cheap and called him back to offer him more money but he said he didn't want it, he couldn't spend it and was glad it went to such a nice chap.

Yes I'm interested to follow that one  I have a Yahama 6hp twin cylinder for sale done under 40 hours if you are interested but think you will be going for something much bigger Dylan. 5 knot tides can be fun to get through against boat stopping thumping waves!

Ouch, Chris, Serious pain- have your legs gone yellow/purple yet as the bruising and bleeding clears?:eek-new: How Do I know????
-thats why we eventually stopped cruising it and sold the Wayfarer, heaving it around slippery slipways and beaches, even with a trolley with a big dolly wheel, was getting too much, and twelve weeks on crutches in my yoof, having given my ankles and knees to an uncaring Patria, and various minor periods of Long John Silver imitations from time to time, made me a bit leary of a rematch.

That's a within budget solution for Dylan mind, buy a Wayfarer and sail out to the Isles- a lot of W cruisers did that with boat and land tents back in our times late 80's,1990's. Their Logs are in the W Assn. Log Library-online too, nowadays, IMRC-used to be a 3 line whip to write yer trip up and send two copies in OR ELSE!

You can live for two months in a Nord Zee and Baltic 'summer' aka 'a green winter' reasonably comfortably like that- the old Nk 1 and 2's were the best for that- the World has those drain flaps at the back

Hope the kids aren't insisting on dragging you around Wakehurst too much! When I did my ribs in big time, everyone seems to want to tell me jokes once word got round.
Mind you, they do wheelchairs there, so you could tire them out pushing you round the long way:D
I've got Dad's old mobility buggy, which I use from time to time when the old damage gets a bit painful- do you want to borrow it, or are you still on bedrest???

BTW, Good Lord, Chris, do they pay Dylan actual money? A whole £75.00-thats 21.428 pts of Guiness!
My Live-in Lady Editor, when not churning out Marmalade*, expects 100-1000 word polished articles on demand, in 10 min flat, tailored to fit the exact slot and theme in the Club Monthly magazine.
What do I get-zero, except removal of breathing priviledges, if article not of reqd. standard.
TTFN- we are mid-redecoration of the living room
DicK
* one doz pots of the 1st tranche under the boiler- wot a shame you cannot move about at the moment:devilish:

if at some stage in the past I have offended you in some way I do most sincerely apologise

if at some stage in the past I have offended you in some way I do most sincerely apologise

Course Not, do not apologise, you've not offended me, nor I you, I hope, Dylan, stand easy in yer bones, just wandering fru yer Fred for a little Drift wiv poor Chris, and a little gentle key winding, as a break from redecorating and hand sanding veneered block floors instead of getting some sailing in while the Solent is less crowded.
It happens on these Foruii, I've noticed and One must be prepared for a bit of " as ye sow, so shall ye reap" :friendly_wink:

Mind you there was a W couple in our time who cruised with young sub teen son and a big Aleutian/Husky-which acted as an Ebbie for them one snowy Easter cruise in West Wales.
So a W with sled dog heater would be an in budget option for the Isles-mind you, so would a MacWester 27-bilge keels and pretty cheap, often o/bded, built solid as a rock and sails better than a Centaur?
An older Newbridge series in BK mode might be in budget too:surprise:

" No Plan survives Contact' after all, but Good Luck with the Grail Quest anyway, and remember, "always reinforce success, not failure" and don't light up a fag, a flowerpot, Origio or a bbq near the o/b petrol tank:encouragement:

No Problemo, SR, another large 1/2pt tumbler of Hot Toddy made with 'GammelDansk' and a slice of lemon, with a plate of herring in senapsill sauce as a tapas coming up.
Do you want to pop down for it tonight, or make it a 'virtual one'??
Got a bit of a cold, and the dust, white spirit and varnish smells seem to linger unless you are firm with them:encouragement:

' powerful hot toddy, dust, white spirit & varnish '; if pubs were still like that none of them would be closing ! :)

Just got back from 'over the pub', no one hardly there at 21.00, place was heaving when i left at 22.30, takeaways being brought in/delivered, -we all 'dine in ' over there from time to time, and there are always pies or cockles.

A variant of the 'Vagina monologues' was being discussed by the 30-something couples as i left-the girls were establishing how few words they had for a penis, whilst interrogating hubbys, lovers, bro-in-laws and the older generations present in re the many words\euphanisms used by males to refer to the female genitalia.

We chaps were winning on variety, but losing out to the few but mostly very disparaging words used by the females to describe our share of the reproductive cycle-I've always got by even as a lad, with the medical terms for both sets of kit and the components, so I realised one was out of one's comfort zone, so handed out a couple of tide tables from our local chandlers and the link to Mark Steel's Leonardo Da Vinci lecture, and slipped away home to study a thesaurus:o

I just had a rather strange thought... There must be numerous people on this forum who, for reasons many and varied, are unable to use their boats. Consequently, said vessels are becoming covered in mildew and goose barnacles while the engine is slowly seizing and the electronics' rare earths returning to a more earthen state...

What would be beneficial for said boats would be for them to be used for a bit and fettled slightly. A rolling boat gathers no ****ehawks and all that.

So who would like to tempt Dylan to perform a low budget refurbishment and extended sea trial of their bilge keeled, big-enough-for-four, pride and joy? Of course he may have to forgo cutting a big hole in the bottom, but maybe he could be allowed to use the emergency outboard bracket from time to time?

I've thought about that too. If Dylan was in this part of the world I reckon I could lend him the boat for a bit, I would be scrutinising the videos a bit more carefully than normal of course to see if he broke anything :D especially as he has an obsession with hitting the bottom as frequently as possible, something I try to avoid.

Doing legs of KTL in a variety of boats would be really interesting for the viewer as well.

Why o why have you set your heart on a Centaur, they are artificially high priced as they are a well known popular boat, you could pick up something similar but for a lot less wonga.

good question....

and one that needs to be answered

they are Britain's most numerous yacht

an English classic

so lots of them about

there are about 25 on the market at the moment

they come up all the time - most are too expensive and are way up in Plan B territory

but they do go at Plan A prices when the engines have gone pop or they have been abandonned

this one

http://dailyboats.com/boat/65003-westerly-centaur-for-sale went for £1750

I missed it by a day

so I know they are there

if I can make the engine well idea work with one Centaur then it will work with all of them and there are still a lot with broken or soon to be broken Volvos in them

I assume, PBO, Wessex and Honda are interested and are prepared to back the idea because it is Centaur

if I go to them and tell them that I want to do the same thing with a Splod 24 then they will be less keen because the design of the well will only work with the seven other Splod 24s

and I assume the astonishing length of the Centaur threads is proof that they are right

It may seem as though this project has been running for a long time - and it feels that way to me too

design work started at the beginning of November with three forumites who have never met moving ideas and images back and forth

I was not ready to start looking seriously until the middle of December once we had worked things out properly

and I did not have the cash in the bank until Jan 2

so serious hunting has only been going on for a month

- so far just one trip to the solent when I gave the RAFYC talk on the 10th Jan.

The Centaur is popular because it is a truly great boat

fantastic seakeeping qualities, accommodation second to none for the size, a fantastic information base, loads of old sails, it takes the ground and I know this is controversial.....

I think they look great - handsome and purposeful rather than beautiful

So I really do want a Centaur if i can make it happen and along the way if I can show a few people how they can be saved from skips then that will be a bonus

if it works with a centaur then it will work with a Pageant and even the bigger ones

as for the boat swap idea I would be happy to swap Katie L for a summer

but the responsibility of looking after some-one elses boat would be extremely stresssful. I sail with just third party insurance - so that would be a massive worry.

If I cannot find the right broken Centaur by mid March then I will start shopping around for a better one or something else bigger than Katie L.

in the meantime prospects are turning up at a rate high enoough to keep my hopes up

and I think that as the boat yards of Britain come to life with old blokes in boiler suits and black thinsulate hats then my chances will increase

so....

if anyone sees a prospect and can find out who owns it...

the outboards do fit astonishngly well in the back of a Centaur - almost as though it was designed that way

All makes sense now and I can't argue with your logic, enjoying reading this thread as well. Good luck with the hunt.

it does not make complete sense - sailing never does

but the logic hangs together given the £6,000 difference between plan A and Plan B

by the way

I have learned a bit more about the

the legendary Tollesbury Centaur

P1230086small-300x225.jpg

http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/scuttlebutt/tollesbury-centaur/

I first heard of her in an out of the blue phone call early last week from a bloke calling himself Stan telling me what a great boat she was

She was sold on Wednesday to a bloke called Julian for something around £3,000

then it was offered to me on Wednesday evening by a bloke called Bert (who shares a phone number with Stan and has a very similar voice) for £3,500

it is now the Woodrolfe's brokerage list for £4,500

it has a wonderful Yanmar engine

details here

http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Weekend.pdf

and here is the story up until today - all most entertaining
