CE Marking

if a boat doesnt have a CE certificate or it is obvious to a potential buyer that modifications to the boat may have voided the CE certificate then the boat might be harder to sell
No worries M, whenever you will want to get rid of your boat whose CE cert became void after a non-oem gyro installation, I might consider buying her for a song...! :D

Actually P, apart from the fact that the F630 was already designed to receive an ARG gyro in the engine bay, the installer of my Seakeeper was a Ferretti dealer who cleared the installation with the factory before doing it;) Which of course means that my boat is worth far more than it was before;)

Wow, I'm impressed.
I did remember that the Mitsubishi gyro was a factory option for your boat, but aside from the fact that you went for a Seakeeper instead (very understandably, mind!), I would have sworn that the OEM placement of the thing was different - or isn't it?
Anyhow, if your dealer have been able to get from the builder a piece of paper with their approval of the modification also in terms of CE compliance (*), chapeau to them! :encouragement:

(*) as opposed to confirming the "technical" approval only, which I would find less surprising...

Yes youre right the OEM placement was different. The ARG gyro is placed at the aft end of the engine bay but I didnt like that location because it would have impeded access around the back and sides of the engines so the dealer suggested a location further forward. Yes the dealer did discuss the installation with the factory and no I dont have a bit of paper confirming that the installation did not void the CE certificate. However I would expect a respected manufacturer like Ferretti to highlight that if it was a problem.

We get this kind of situation regularly in my business with customers wanting to modify the machines we have sold them. The responsible ones always contact us to ask us to obtain permission from the manufacturers to do it and to get confirmation that the CE certificate is still valid. We do get that in writing before giving the customer the go ahead

Best of luck with your CE enquiries. Can I just add a word of caution if approaching any "Authorities" on this subject.

When I was just looking for my Corvette I found several possible boats in the Channel Islands, some of which were clearly non VAT paid and others were dubious. RYA and Broker advice concerning one specific boat was plain wrong. The VAT paid status had ended on time out of EU basis, but the advice given was contrary. I wonder now if the now UK based owners know (or care) about the possible dubious nature of the VAT status. I also know of another for sale but simply not selling in the CI that then appeared for sale in the UK, and again I very much doubt VAT was paid.

But the caution here is that I made an innocuous call to HMRC Small Craft unit enquiring simply to find out how the process of paying VAT works when a chargeable event arises - Customs Notice 8 mentions a VAT charge is due, but not the mechanics of how it is paid to HMRC. The advice was excellent and accurate, but what alarmed me were the follow up calls during my extended hunt over several months. I would periodically receive a call asking how the purchase process was proceeding.

I did end up buying a non VAT paid boat from Jersey and went through the proper process of paying the VAT (I even had a write up about this little known process in Motorboat Owner magazine). HMRC Small Craft unit (all both of them) actually visited my boat and we had a good chat and explained the typical tasks they undertake over a cup of tea. I am sure had I not declared and paid a VAT due sum they would have hounded me to prove any new acquisition was bona fide VAT paid.

It was definitely the case that the blip I caused upon their radar refused to fade out. So just beware when associating with officialdom.

Duly noted thank you.
It appears that the vat situation is relatively clear cut i.e. there is paperwork that clearly shows the exemption but we will see.

The CE side is a little more vexed though.... :)
