CD\'s: marine corrosion

Has anyone encountered corrosion or corruption on compact discs stored long term on board? Are there any special recommendations for storage/cleaning?l

I have not had a problem with the discs themselves but the CD players don't seem to like the sea air after a while. An ipod thingy would be better.

I make copies of the ones I want for the boat & keep the original at home. Same for the car. Not sure about copyright but at least I paid for the original.

I also make copies. Primarily cause I can use MP3 onboard so the number of discs is very much reduced.

This can be a problem even ashore, I think it is down to a 'cheap' bunch of disc's. We have come across this in Data discs and apparently some discs do suffer from corrosion between the lamination !?

No Problem with Copyright as long as it is for personal use. Best idea to keep originals at home and copies on the boat/in the car.

We have CD's that have lived on board a decade or more and never any problem. Mostly, but not all, copies but that only 'cos of convenience of having original at home plus a copy to play on the boat. Our boat is dry though (and I assume yours is too, it being a metal boat).

Never had any problems with CD players either. Current one, an Alpine, is now 10 years old and wish it would die so's would have an excuse to buy a new one, but nope it is in perfect condition and I suspect they have an easier life in a boat than a car. Never had any corrosion etc prob's nor anything else on other domestic electronic equipment that peeps warn of doom and gloom about (computers, amateur radio transceivers, TV's, etc, etc). Just keep a dry boat - is easy with steel.

Strictly speaking under the copyright laws in the UK you are not allowed to make any copies of CDs you buy. So you are technically breaking the law if you make a copy of the CD or rip a song off the CD and put it onto you mp3 player or computer.

Practically speaking you are unlikely to be prosecuted/sued if it is for personal use and you own the original. (Other countries like the USA have more flexible copyright laws that allow copying for personal use)
