Looking at say a HDF 296 or Baldwin BF825 these have little holes in the top whereas say a Crosland 522 has a performated circumference but all the filters are apparently interchangeable? - is this simply a difference of manufacturer preference? Also does anyone have diagram (or even better a link to a quick replacement guide!) for where the 4 different rubber washers go that come with a filter?

The Perkins original part for the engine filter has the circumference too, and is interchangeable with the 296 cartridge.

Another difference may be found on the bottom plate of the cartridge: some cartridges have a series of (6?) radial slits which invite the fuel to rotate inside the glass bowl and coalesce water I suppose, other cartridges (for example the Perkins one) do not have them.

The four o-oring are:
1. Bigger one --> top of the cartridge, it usually sits inside a groove on the metal head and has to be pinned out
2. Slightly smaller one --> among lower side of cartridge and metal/glass bowl
3. Finger ring sized one --> around the central spigot protruding below the metal head
4. TIny 5MM -ish one --> for the central retaining bolt (sometimes replaced by a metal washer)
