Sardinha's in February ?? Oh well enjoy :D

Most ''yotties'' don't fish cos they cant face gutting them. They is all a bunch of poofs :D

I've never done more than just put the mackerel in the bucket. They flip around a bit for a while but that doesn't bother me.

I reckon that's as unfeelingly cold as anything I've read on these pages! Whacking fish with something solid to stop them flapping may not be dainty, but it's meant to be humane.

They flap about with excitement . They just love being on a boat like us all.

God forbid - if you or Mr Calvert find yourselves trapped underwater this summer, I daresay you'll both flap a bit too, for a few appalling moments. Possibly not with enthusiasm.

You can kill smaller fish (inc. mackerel) very quickly by gripping the body in one hand and head in the other and bending the head back 90 degrees or so. Sounds brutal but a lot less hassle that looking for something to whack them with.

Bigger fish get a knock from a very heavy old Lewmar winch handle. Only fish this didn't work on was a cod of 21lb. Any suggestions?

You need plenty of newspaper and a piece of towel (very commonly described as a vvanker's hankie)

Land your fish, grip in newspaper, rap smartly on a handy winch, throw in bucket complete with paper, wipe winch with hankie. Done.

Pass on any 21lb cod to me to deal with.

Some years ago in Feburary when out with the Charter Skipper Mike Cottingham on his boat Challenger Two out of Lymington we caught a bucket full of good size herrings.

We used very small feather type lure-Sabiki IIRC-and were pulling in three or four at a time.

They were delicious-fried in light oil and eaten with fresh brown bread and butter.

Whats not to like......................

I take them to my local vet who puts them to sleep humanely for me.

That's what he tells you...I bet there's an aquarium in the vet's waiting room, yes? Take a long look at the fish next time.

I wonder if the stuff that puts critters to sleep, would kill anyone feasting on the bodies, too? Perhaps nobody knows? I guess it's uncommon for people to devour their pets.

Perhaps keep a bucket of Muscadet in the cockpit? Fish comes out of the sea, no need to unhook him, dunk him straight in the wine and he'll die in seconds, marinading himself.

No tuna here - just a couple of mackeral and a pollack caught off Aberporth, straight into the hot smoker - lovely! :p
