This doesn't ring true, what is scrap steel worth, how much ( in weight) could they have made off with.

I can only see a reference to metal. Perhaps they were trying to nick the cables to the radar tower?

Firefly, agree the guys in the photo are pretty distinctive, fancy dressing in high vis orange to go thieving.

Scrotes did that last year, putting the HHA radar out of action, having first tried to steal the copper pipe feed from the propane tank to the shower block heater in the marina. They got a shock when they cut through as they didn't turn of the gas first.
