Does anyone know if Cartagena Marina lets you work on you own boat when on the hard?
When I was there two years ago as long as you were paying them to power wash and anti foul below the waterline, within reason, you could do what you wanted above the waterline.
They also let you live on the boat on the hard (toilets and showers are fine) so there is no one to keep an eye on anything you do after hours.

However they won’t let you bring in independent contractors to work on the boat.
There was an independent guy called Jon Snow, very knowledgeable and pleasant guy. He’s good and he knows a nearby yard where he can work on the boat if you need him. Well recommended

Hi,
You have two options in Cartagena, neither of which are associated with Yacht Port Cartagena (YPC).
Firstly RCRC (yacht club) will lift and hold in a crane (15t) for below the waterline work, they have short loan of cradles (I think) for you to go on the hard for longer jobs, but not for long term storage and they don't let you live on the boat whilst it's out, so you have to factor in accommodation.
Second option is ASCAR who operate a commercial yard next door to YPC. As has been said, they won't let you work on your boat (officially), but if they have you out in the yard for them to work on your boat, they won't generally make a fuss about you discretely doing odd maintenance jobs. They will let you live aboard whilst its on the hard and give you a pass to the gates, showers and loos.
Jon Snow is indeed an approachable and knowledgeable guy, but has officially retired from taking on work in YPC, so you may find that he is difficult to contact and reluctant to come on site.
If you need any more info, please feel free to ask.

Hi,

One more if I may, What package for internet do most people use? As I understand the marina network is not that good? I have an unblocked mifi, so its just a matter of sim choice???

Not sure about RCRC, but YPC network is average-to-good depending where you are located (in relation to aerials). For those on long stay contracts (90+days) you get free wifi access for two devices, each additional 2 devices cost 15euro/month. We manage using it, but have the option of a wifi dongle with a spanish sim if it goes down for any length of time. We have found the best value spanish sim to be from TUENTI, who offer 1.5gb for 6Euro, which lasts 30 days, they have more data packages available for more money and often have offers on, check out their website. For me the advantage is that you are not contracted, you can renew your month automatically or when you want to, it can all be done online or through the APP, and you get unlimited VOZ Digital (Voice over IP) calls from the APP for free.
Hope that helps.

This site covers most mobile options for visitors, http://prepaid-data-sim-card.wikia.com/wiki/Spain, but can you not access the contracts for locals ? Unless your plans have changed I thought you were becoming resident which should get you access to better and more flexible data rates that you should be able to use throughout the EU. I'm not that impressed by the short term deals available to non residents over the last couple of years, nothing like as good as Greece or Italy.

Hi Robbie,

We are residents so we will be exploring the contract side of things when we are on the ground, in the meantime I am just looking at stopgaps, as now my wife has started working and internet is crucial so we will need it from the off. Have you come across some of the better contract deals? Ideally we need about 80GB a month.....

Thanks Blampied,

I guess for a first timer it will be luck of the draw!

Hi,
the WIFI in YPC is excellent. I’ve just done a Speedtest and got 30MBs up and down. A Skype call wasn’t awesome recently so you may need to check Jitter if you’re planning on doing too many calls.

The ‘secret’ here is to get a 5Ghz access device. The usual one seems to be https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/litebeam-m5/. One of the marinaros will sort you out with kit and install if you need it. Ask around when you arrive. We were struggling to get YouTube before the M5, but now it’s great. Finally, their management system is fairly advanced so you do get locked to two devices but install your own access point and an M5 and you can have as many devices as you like.

Hope that helps a little.

I enjoyed ecellent wifi at YPC. I know a few people that didn't, but they were trying to use small home routers and weren't necessarily anywhere near an access point.

For outside of the marina, I found Masmovil pretty good. They seemed to offer the most data out of the main mobile networks.

Hello Carmel

I have a boat in Cartagena

I am looking for a good electricain to do some work on my Engine Stop SAILING BOAT

Any help is welcome

Preferebaly English speaking

Hi Graham,
Jon Snow may me available for 'odd jobs' but he has officially retired from working here, so you have to find someone who knows his number as it is not available from the marina office. (There are a couple of boats who know him)
Regards engine work, there are three possible options:
1) 'Rojo' or 'Red', he is a genius guy who knows about all things boaty, his number is available from the marina office, but you can see him usually on boats (he drives a mercedes sprinter/transit van), you can't miss him because of the colour of his hair. If he can't help you personally, he will have the contacts - his engineer friend replaced injectors on our pals' engines.
2) Yanmar/Sole/Nanni/Mercury service & engineering shop about half a mile from the marina. (I can give you directions if/when you arrive)
3) Ascar - huge commercial yard next door to YPC, they will have the skills on site €30/hr but may need the boat to go round there for work, depending what the problem is.

Given it's electrical work you want, I would say Rojo is your best option by far.
I'm on Tingha on F20, come and see me if you need any more info.
Cheers
