Caroline is back

They really lucked out. They are using the old World Service aerial on the orford cobra mist site. (Their frequency is the same as the old World Service). Nice of the BBC to leave them a ready tuned very expensive aerial and transmitter Hall!

Not using the aerial on Ross Revenge?

or listening to AFN and the sound of Jefferson Airplane and Buffalo Springfield wafting through the static in 1968 ?
and how about for the really keen, Radio Geronimo out of Monte Carlo.
All a breath of fresh air amonst the pop pap , nothing changes :)

Where can you still see the Radio 390 logo and where did Radio Sutch transmit from. ?

Re: Another quiz !

Was having a chat about this Peter Moore, who owns Radio Caroline, over a pint or two yesterday evening in my local.

He told me that by far the most most successful of the Thames Estuary pirate stations was Radio London which I remember became my own choice (Kenny & Cash, Emperor Rosko, Stuart Henry etc).

'Big L' was based on the MV Galaxy which was originally the US Navy minesweeper 'Density' (no- not a typo). Apparently the ship was unusual in having two engine rooms, separated by watertight doors in case one was damaged by a mine......

Yup. I liked Radio London a lot.

Listening today at Brightlingsea . Reception OK but not brilliant. Don't think we had FM in those day's which spoils us now.

Trying to remember if we still had "The light Program" and "Home Service" .

Re: Another quiz !

Yes we still did. Light Program morphed to became Radio One after the pirate DJs were employed by BBC in 1967.

As I remember it, Radio 1 was all new, intended to win back audiences from the pirates, who were being forced out of business by the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act, which made it illegal to supply the ships. The Beeb did take on many ex pirate DJ's to staff this new service, brining the fans of those DJ's with them as audience.

The previously existing Beeb programmes were rebranded as follows:

The Light Programme became Radio 2
The Third Programme became Radio 3
The Home Service became Radio 4

Re: Another quiz !

In the days of the pirates the Gov went through a period of trying to jam their broadcasts. Where I lived in Herne Bay it didn't work because all the pirates were to the north of us, the jamming came from a transmitter somewhere to the west, so all we had to do was orientate our tranny radios around to tune out the jamming.

Re: Another quiz !

Isn't it ironic that the audio quality of AM Long and Medium wave broadcasts, is just as good, if not better than the lamentable DAB, that the government and the BBC try to ram down our throats at every opportunity. Plus, AM can still be received in areas of weak signal and still remain listenable, and an AM radio doesn't eat a set of batteries every day; in fact it can be received on a crystal radio, which requires no electrical supply whatsoever. So that's progress

All Total Tosh of course :):):)
...and do keep up, a few "Which Magazine" reviews will might help about the battery life of the latest DAB radios, latest chip set are far more battery friendly.

That AM signal is grim during the day and even if they are using an erp of Kilowatt the single is weak and can fade to nothing during the evening driving along the road running from Sheppey to Medway, where you are probably no more than 30 kilometres away from the TX at any point.
Unfortunately the old tosh being spewed out on DAB remains constantly audable. :)
As for the jamming of the pirate Radio London , at one point it came from the mast on Beacon Hill just above Upnor.
Just been to look at the location on Google Earth and for some strange reason they have Photoshopped out the name of the street sign.
