Carnlough - anyone been there?

I like the idea of visiting the small port of Carnlough, Northern Ireland, rather than just stopping off in the usual marinas on the east Irish coast.
What experiences has anyone had of that little harbour, and are there any other recommendations for 'off the beaten track' ports of call between Dublin and Rathlin Island.
Thanks for reading this,
Tam

Carlough is a small fishing port. Few yachts visit now since the marina was built at Glenarm, about 5 miles to the south. Beware the fish farms in the bay if approaching in poor visibility. Glenarm is a very quiet village with several (empty midweek) pubs, a couple of shops and a small chandlery. There are several good walks in the forest nearby.

It might be worthwhile to look at Red Bay to the north.

get the ICC sailing directions for Ireland E coast, Imray et al, every hole in the wall is described.
Carnlough used to be the staging post, but now the charming marina at Glenarm has taken away the challenge of getting a berth in the tiny harbour.
rathlin harbour now much improved BTW. Tie up alongside wall, negligible tide range

There's a small marina at Ardglass, a few miles south of the entrance to Strangford Lough. Strangfords nice, but if you're headed north in a hurry and want to stop overnight, its worth a visit.

Thanks for answering.
Yes I know Ardglass and have enjoyed a few visits in great shelter there.
Also a couple of trips into Strangford - recommend Quoile Yacht Club. We received a great welcome, and felt very special moored 'amongst' the trees!

Thanks - yes we have the Sailing Intructions, but it is very useful to receive updates by personal experiences of fellow sailors.
Certainly aiming for Glenarm

Re: Glenarm

glad to hear my home club gave you a good welcome! If you want any advice about Strangford and elsewhere PM me.
PS - keep it quiet. the pilot books do a great job keeping people out of the lough!

Glenarm marina is a better place to stay, with a friendly welcome at Charlies for food (tel: 028 2884 1276 - ask for Anne Marie) and lovely walks up the river glen.

Carnlough has the well known Londonderry Arms Hotel, which serves good food, but the harbour offers no security from empty beer bottles, etc! However it is easy to get a taxi from Glenarm to Carnlough, if you want to check it out.

+1 for Glenarm, lovely walks, good pubs & always lots of flags (!), maybe a bit of "rivalry" evident locally, as seen in the notice:
"Keep Glenarm tidy....leave your rubbish in Carnlough"

Glenarm is now well established as a marina but the erstwhile chandlery and Mariner outboard agent has been closed for quite a few years

A gap of thirteen years, one month and three weeks between postings to a thread is quite impressive.

Welcome, Don. I spent a couple of days in Glenarm this summer. Not the most scenically rewarding marina in the world, but the people were friendly, the showers were good and the café in the village is nice.
