Carnage on Ryde Sands in this year\'s Round the Island...?

I predict that there will be more than the usual number of boats aground on Ryde Sands during this year's Round the Island Race.

Firstly because the Fort is no longer a mark of the course, lots of boats will come up the island shore in shallow water and then get caught in the Trap - the eastward facing deeper water U shaped "bay" in the sands...

...and now, as of today, NE and SW Mining Ground buoys have both been removed from station. I always made use of them to guage where the edge of the sands were. This will now be much more difficult!

Except I guess for those in the second half of the fleet who will have the shape of the sands marked out by boats aground!

Should make an interesting race...

not much of a problem when you only draw 2' 9" /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Even when the sands dry to 2m? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looks like the weather got the better of them yesterday and the bouys were not lifted after all. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Interesting that...

Bloody would be if we got stuck as we draw 2.2mtrs!!!!! Mental note mad (so I will forget!) about the mining buoys, thanks!

In the past I have normally been in the 2nd lot and those aground make it easy to see where the shallows are and add enjoyment as we use them as marks to tack around. What I really enjoy though, is those that follow me as I only need 2'9" the same as Talbot ...
