Carli goes on sale

Re: Carli goes on sale/Buying Birchwood 33

No, its not the one at Penton Hook. The one we are looking at has Ford engines.

I am hoping to be able to take the new one to the ATYC rally in August. Alex (Rebellion) wants to compete in the boat handling there. Just need that buyer for Carli (bites finger nails etc).

Re: Carli goes on sale/Buying Birchwood 33

I would love to take her over to Holland.

One of my colleagues has a 33. He cruised the Thames for a while then crossed the Channel. He now keeps her on the Canal du Midi.

I must admit Byron did put me off the largest Birchwoods somewhat, although the internal layout didn't suit our rather unusual requirements as well as the current vessel.

Space is what you require however, and that's one thing they have in abundance for a family!

I have heard no other quality issues...

Re: Carli goes on sale/Buying Birchwood 33

Well, I have looked up Byron's words on the subject and found this in a thread entitled "Things to do with a Birchwood".

The 25 and the 33 aft cabin were the only half decent boats they ever made. After that they were made of cardboard, Sellotape and sealing wax.
Best place for a 44 is on the Hard.

So it looks like both my existing and intended Birchwood boats have Byron's seal of approval....

Ford 6 cyl can be 85/7 hp, they were thorneycroft marinized York type, look at the front this type have toothed timing belts.

The only comment I have about the 33 is that hey are b****y noisy. Can hear them coming even before a Solar.

[/ QUOTE ]

But it is a very throbby, powerfull sounding noise, I always think 33's sound good.

Re: Carli goes on sale/Buying Birchwood 33

Alex will be happy so long as it handles like a Solar!

Throbbing power sounds good. If it gets too loud I will bring my ear defenders home from work to use aboard....

Would be surprised if a late 70s boat had Yorks in it...Thats more an engine fitted to Freemans several years before that.

I used to own a 72 Freeman and that already had the newer block, a mate of mine had a 1966 Freeman with the Yorks in it.

Looked long and hard at 33s before settling on Jedi, the ones we say had Perkins, one a single 4286 (?) and the other twin if I recall the papers. Did not want a single engine and the twin was a bit out of our price range and we still like open tops. Lovely boats.

Yorks? is that the same engine they had in Ford Transits? 80hp deisels? If so I had them in a 35 European I owned many years ago.

Well both the Yorks and the later ones were in Transits as that van has been around for ever.

There is also an even newer variant called the "2.5 DI" (Direct Injection). I marinised one of them and put it in a Selcruiser to replace a Volvo petrol years ago as well.

Shut up, or I'll buy another Birchwood... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I haven't seen many for sale, other than the Green one at Bray!?

Looks too dear to me, unless I stole the one we have now! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Carli goes on sale/Buying Birchwood 33

Two more 30 foot things have appeared on Brays listings now. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Carli goes on sale/Buying Birchwood 33

Indeed there are!

While twin engines have a few advantages, mainly for manoevring in t'wind, and for tidal work, the day to day overheads and extra noise aren't worth it on the upper stretches.
Likewise, my Wing engine ain't perfect, but it's a handly little spare which can be used when needed, or left idle most of the time, and half a gallon an hour is as good as both my Scarani Rio 26 with a single Volvo, or the last No Regrets, again smaller.

Dual helms are sheer bliss though. Up in the sun in near silence really offers the experience of a far more pricey boat, along with similar wet weather ability to the fabled B25.

I wouldn't go back to a single, inner helm for all the Tea in China /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Carli goes on sale/Buying Birchwood 33

Is there any point leaving your wing engine ticking over?

How often have you actually NEEDED to use? as opposed to thinking it might be useful before realising it isn't?

Re: Carli goes on sale/Buying Birchwood 33

The Nanni is started and checked every outing, and used for turning in the Marina if it's windy, then turned off after we leave the cut.

Likewise, if moving off a bank with an inshore wind, it's handy, otherwise it's left off.

I consider it good to use it regularly, as we know it's ready to rock n'roll if the [--word removed--] hits the fan!
