I have a new to me Tohatsu 6hp 2 stroke outboard.

Runs fine under load but a bit smokey at tick over and plug seems to oil up and has cut out just when docking.

The carb seems to have one adjustment screw apart from throttle stop.

It's been a long time from having 2 strokes . Does this adjust fuel/air mixture
and how do I make adjustments ?

Thanks in advance.

Not familiar with your particular engine, but there may be an adjusting screw hidden away behing a blanking plug-to keep home mechanics from upsetting factory settings perhaps!

Also, float level is critical. Two strokes should actually two stroke-that is fire at every revolution. If they are too rich they do not, they four and eight stroke and oil plugs and emit too much smoke.

This is perhaps where we came in......................

I suggest finding a manual or asking advice re the carb from a Tohatsu dealer mechanic.

If the carb is similar to this:

1-18 is the idle mixture screw and 1-16 is the idle speed screw.

Start by checking, cleaning and adjusting, or replacing, the plugs and making sure you have good sparks that will jump best part of 1 cm.

Check compressions if you have or can beg, borrow or steal a gauge. Report readings

Running in a tank using fresh 50:1 fuel mix, with a TCW3 2 stroke outboard oil

reduce the idle speed as low as possible.
Slowly turn in the mixture screw until it falters ... keep reducing the speed if necessary....... then back out a little at a time until it runs sweetly.

Finally adjust the idle speed as required

Thanks to all and for Vic's excellent picture of carb bits.
Went sailing today (awesome day) .

New fresh fuel and oil , and adjusted mixture screw as suggested.

All fine now. Many Thanks.

Today was a good day for 2 strokes.

Even my Flymo started. 3rd pull. Never done that before at the start of the season ( 300 pulls usually nearer the mark). Probably the result of finding the engine manual on line and now knowing the correct fuel mix and how to adjust its carb.

No such a good day for me ' cos instead of giving up and chucking it back in the shed I felt bound to cut the lawn
