Customer Loyalty - my A**E

I was with them for 20 years - I found that if I rang as an entirely new client I could HALVE my insurance - however to renew that cut no ice - so having a slight feeling of my 20 years loyalty being abused - I went else where.

This appears standard practice - apparently we are all to lazy to change so they milk us.

Am just turned 26 so still being stung as a young driver...
when I first started Eagle Star(through local broker), Swinton and endsleigh were reasonable but now have progressed onto Nationwide (they have a 10% discount if you do it online).

As for the post about starting to build no claims at 25, it really isnt the magic number that everyone thinks it is. the only difference I noticed is that they reduced the compulsory excess.

When I first started to drive we did a few sums and the cost difference between having my own insurance or waiting a few years was marginal in the long term. They sting you for being young and they sting you for no NCD. By waiting you are not being hit by a multiplied miltiplier but youre not building the NCD while you have a cheap & low insurance group car so come 25 there could be a shock in store.

Consider only insuring 3rd party (is the car really worth the cost of a claim?) and consider putting yourself or a member of the opposite sex on as a second driver. Some companies will reduce the premium, even if the second driver is higher risk.

e.g. me: male, 25, 7yrs NCD. Elephant offered 50 quid less if i added gf: 24, provisional licence... go figure!!

Best thing to do is ring around brokers or check a few web based brokers. Last year I got my renewal (ford insure - which is Norwich Union) and managed to get about 30% cheaper by looking on the web. I phoned my company and they matched it - no quibbles, no questions - makes you wonder weather they just load it up to see if you notice and then reduce it if you question. Also my insurance is considerably cheaper with my wife as a second driver - don't know why - it just is!.
The other thing is that I've just bee searching round last week to get an idea of the premiums if I change car, and most of the web based companies have e-mailed me back a week later offering all sorts of extra discounts.
