Number 1 daughter (19) is looking to insure a car for herself. Up to now she's been driving our "other" car on my insurance.

She's only thinking of a Peugeot 106 or similar, but where's the best insurance deal.

Have any of you Buttlescutters been through this with your own sprogs, and who would you recommend??

b*gger the insurance, mate, vet the dochter's boyfriends for mechanical knowledge. eg: can you replace clutch? ever done a top end overhaul (well, if he's any good he'll know what that means)? bleed brakes? panel bashing? fix radiator leaks? fix radio? .. AA membership best bet but make sure its in her name and get 2 door version so no 6ft 15 st pals can get in .... or weld the back doors shut ...

yes been through this twice and CIS will give an instant 20% no claims bonus to new young drivers, gross premium might be a bit more but one year down the line you can tranfer to a cheaper company with a large no claims bonus, although we found with one of our sons that CIS continued to be the cheapest. Younger son is now 21 and is just up for renewal will get 60% NCB on the new policy.

Or Endsleigh. Both are good deals.

Endsleigh are one of the most expensive for cover. Cheap deal from them leaves you with no cover and from personal experience they quibble over everything...

Try some of the online companies like elephant.co.uk or Tesco or even direct line.

My lads at Uni and he has a 106XRD and it costs £395 per annum on my wife's full no claims with the Co-op. She reinsured with TESCO without a no claims for her own car. This works out the cheapest way. Until they get into their twenties the insurers hammer them. My son will start to earn his own No Claims once he is 25. Prior to that is waste of money. As I have a company car the insurers don't recognise a no claims in my own name.

Regards.

Owner's Clubs do really good deals. Depends what car you end up with. My wife had an MX5 insured for £139.
(How can I say this? She isn't what the insurance market would class as young.)

Interesting that so many people have got a good deal through Tesco - I believe they are effectively an agent for Norwich Union who are one of the most expensive for young drivers.

I go along with the CIS option - worked out cheapest for us, although their processes are a bit antiquated.

Give Norwich Union a ring. I can't remember the figures off hand but they were way cheaper for both my kids..... So much so that SWMBO and I have both changed to them as well.

I can't speak for young folk but I got a good deal online with Nationwide.
Cheaper quote and V good service, as someone shunted me and the claim was very easy, repair organised and done, hire car provided, and I didn’t have to pay any excess then fight to reclaim it.

We use CIS (The Co-op) for the kids' cars. The fully comp policy we have is an "any driver" type. This has different levels of excess for the age of the drivers at the time of the claim.
