Its very sad when this happens, The passage between Start Point and Prawl Point can be rough at the best of times. Just a thought maybe they hit a half submerged container. There must still be a few around that area be very nasty at the best of times.

I don't even know where to begin. Have you no feelings at all?

I have feelings. I save them for friends and family.I do not spend my time thinking about people I don't know, and will never meet. There are far too many. Neither do I agree with all the pointeless (to my mind) expressions of condolence posted on this and other forums that I frequent when someone they never knew died.
If they know the deceased then contact the family and friends, not post mewlings on the web.
I do not see what comfort those who knew the deceased will take from the well wishes of a total stranger.
If they are that badly affected by the disaster then I doubt that they'll be surfing the net at this time.
I'm sure this goes against the current trend whereby we should all be affected by all tragedies, whether in this county or around the world but as you may surmise I don't.
But why do you have to be unpleasant about it? Seems there's more and more of this on these forums, they used to be a friendly pleasant place to pass some time, but not any longer.
I would humbly suggest not responding to the post. IMHO he's made an ill-considered post, but responding is just going to create a barny, and there's no point. On an internet forum like this you inevitably get all sorts.
Skiver, I don't know you [thankfully] but you're exhibiting the traits of somebody who epitomises everything that is wrong in this country. No regard for others, just an obsession with self, self, self. [Are you by any chance related to that Goody woman, or the Beckhams?]
However, should I pass you as your boat has capsized, I won't ignore you, tempting though it may be, even though I don't know you I'll rescue you, but don't expect me to be gentle.
Ed Broadway the owner is a great skipper. Long history of RORC/JOG offshore and coastal racing. He successfully sailed the double handed round britain and Ireland race last year.
The boat is a max fun 35.
I'm still trying to locate friends who may have been crewing for him this weekend.
No disrespect was intended on my part and I had no intention of dissecting this tragedy. Quite simply the report said that the keel fell off the boat and I wanted to know what sort of boat it was nothing more.
It's now been confirmed that it was Ed Broadway's boat "Hooligan V", a Max Fun 35, which was involved in this tragic incident. I'm certain that we all, as sailors, wish to express our sorrow and condolences to the family and friends of the crew member who died in this tragic accident. That doesn't stop us wanting to know the details of the accident - and, as csail pointed out earlier, knowing about the boat could prevent another tragedy.
Hooligan V was a very successful racer. I believe that Ed Broadway and his crew were very experienced and accomplished, and that the circumstances of the accident were overwhelming.
The boat was a Max Fun 35. It's a very light displacement boat, just 3000kg for a 35 footer, and half of that is the keel. You can see details of the design here. The coastguard say that no containers from the Napoli were floating around in the area. The MAIB will carry out an investigation. Until their conclusions are reported, it doesn't help to speculate.
Hooligan V had its own homepage on the internet. I found it tragically ironic. For all of us who venture out to sea, "there but for fortune" should be constantly in our minds.
What a good post on a bad day for south coats sailors.
I am sorry for those fellow forumites that have conections and for the family despite the fact that I do not know any of the people involved. I would like to think that if I croaked it sailin then at least a few people who I had not met in life might be just a little bit sad about a fellow sailor. I have always a viewed it as a big family.
It is a good idea that there is a discussion about how this accident happened, but there is no real need to conduct it until the facts have been established.
phoned Devon and Cornwall police and they confirmed that my friend (Phil) was not the casualty.. I have also subsequently heard he wasnt on board at the time.
My heart goes out again to the family of the guy who died and to Ed and the rest of the crew.
...it tolls for thee.
"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee."
