So there I was enjoying a little after work cruise with my 4 pack of Belgium larger, a round loaf of bread, pate and a decent cheese cruising along at no more than 4 mph if that when all hell breaks loose....

From behind the whole river is full of canoeist approaching me at a rate of knots, wont name and shame on here as its not the done thing (they were from Richmond Canoe Club) so I move over to the right (heading down) to get right out the way, then of course I head right into the path of a fishman with one of those poles that stretches from here to Heathrow, he then gives me some choice words.

In the meantime said canoeist have somehow manage to tangle themselves up with a couple of women rowers (no name and shame they were from Twickenham) directly behind my stern and they ALL start giving me grief!

So from doing absolutely nothing wrong other than enjoy the river (and my pate) I have upset a fisherman, rower and canoeists all in one go...

Just cant win....I think I am going to by a small sailing boat instead.

What do you mean , you can't win ?

You have won !! You upset a fisherman , a rower and some canoeists all in one go !!

I have a small sailing boat you can buy ! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You can win, if you get a saily boat you can tack in front of all the mobos and annoy them as well /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They may be massing in Abingdon, they've done that before, then come down in droves once Wimbeldon is over.

A "Drove" of narrowboats eh??

Hmmmmmmm, an interesting idea. Of course what you'll have to remember is, that narrowboats were plying the Thames 200 years ago, so I suppose if you take grandfather rights into consideration, they have more right to use it than anybody else!

Yaaaaaaaaabooooo! Hiding behind the sofa! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Don't Colregs tell you to 'Maintain course' when being overtaken? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Anyway, how many of those 'largers' had you consumed /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

p.s. Well done, Rowers, Fishermen and Canoeists! That deserves a little respect Sir! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Marinas?

I had a think about this the other day.

Suppose you had a Marina, with 100 boats in, at an average of £3500 pa each.

Thats a gross income of £350K, and after you consider the maintaining of such a place, and the staff and other running costs, there ain't a great haul after tax, right?

So why do people berate the Marinas? My experience of them is fine so far. Great places, Clean, well kitted, Brilliant staff and no unresolved issues.

Thats MDL and TingDene by the way....

£3000 pa gets me a clean safe mooring with free water and night lighting, showers, WC's, reasonably priced electricity for boat consumption, free secure parking for mine and my guests cars, and it's all unlimited use!

We visit perhaps thirty times a year, which makes it a winner!

Sorry if I pushed a button, was only having a bit of a jest......

To answer your point though, I suppose it depends on whether you can afford 3/3.5k a year? If you can then yes, I would agree it's a pretty nice deal. Some of the nice Marinas on the canals are not as expensive as that, about 2/2.5k a year for a 60 footer.

Trouble is, not everybody can afford it. I know I can't but then I don't have to, my moorings are FOC. I don't get all the nice facilities though. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sure Mike, but you can buy a house in Holland for £75K, try that in Windsor!

Chrusty, for once you are innocent! (Free the Chrusty 1!!) I was only giving a second opinion, based on my reckoning of values.

What I'm not so sure about are the basic riverbank moorings which seem to cost as much as the Marina's charge!

"there ain't a great haul after tax, right?"

Agree 100%,far to cheap, anything over say ....33ft should pay twice as much ?

"Chrusty, for once you are innocent!"

Thankee kind sir, I will try to maintain a semblance of this new found innocence in future communications. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
