Can\'t get neutral on an MS2 gearbox

I'm having trouble with the MS2 gearbox fitted to our md11d VP engine. It starts in neutral ok and then shifts to forward or astern just fine. But thereafter it's hard to get it back into neutral - it just goes straight from forward to astern when I move the lever to neutral, and stays astern when I move it further to the astern position. Then it goes into forward when I move the lever to neutral, and so on. It's not the cable - it does the same with the cable removed, changing gear by moving the lever on the gearbox by hand. Manoeuvring is entertaining to say the least.
The boat is new to us so I don't have any history. The oil has some "gold" powder in it despite being changed last season.
I haven't removed the eccentric changer mechanism yet to see if it's damaged. Has anyone encountered the problem, and if so what was the solution please?

Re: Can\'t get neutral on an MS2 gearbox

either the selector or the sliding sleeve is worn

if you remove the
the selector is v shaped and runns in the groove in the selector
if the adjustment is wrong then the trailing edge of the selecter wears against the cone.

So the result is too much play in the sliding sleeve/selector wedge mechanism - which allows the sleeve to wander up and down from gear to gear? Mike

Re: Can\'t get neutral on an MS2 gearbox

I think I may know what's wrong now. I swopped the gearbox last w/e for another. With the faulty one on the bench I found the set screw on the end of the selector pin was slightly loose. It appears to set the clearance between the cone and the selector pin - if loose I guess the cone could wander more than it should in neutral. It's obviously been set up to a tolerance with shims. Since I've got it working with another gearbox I won't swop them back to check. Thanks again for the help.
