Canopy Template Material

Hi all,

Now you may call me a tight-wad over this but here goes..

I"m trying to source some more canopy template material but the issue is shipping. Profabrics need me to use a courier on 3+m and I need near 7m. But on a £17.50 order there is a 25 quid shipping charge, which for mere template material is nuts.
So I was wondering if a 200gsm tarpaulin or similar might work as I can get free delivery on these.

Delivery is to Northern Ireland. If I deliver to a GB address it saves about 7 quid with profabrics and the like. (Who are not in my good books for when I ordered 2m gave me very wonky cuts both sides so 2m was more like 1.9m

Any thoughts appreciated.
 
When I last bought some I used Solent Sew
It is called PE Fibertex Patterning Material

But that seems eyewateringly expensive.
IIRC that last delivery from Solent Sew was 2 months late - I remember having to threaten cancellation and car payment protection.
At the time, I made a note not to buy from them again.

Probably best to pay the extra carriage to Pro Fabrics.
I use Pro Fabrics - not the cheapest but very good fast service.

Thanks for that.. They were pretty apologetic for having the visual cutting accuracy of Stevie Wonder on the last order so I may have to suffer paying more for delivery than the product. :mad:
 
Not sure that Tarpaulin material will be as good as Fibertex but depends on the job.
Tarpaulin material is much easier to "scrunch up" but if you only need a template that lies flat it might do.
I tend to buy a roll of Fibertex and use it for everything - eg. sewing projects and templating the teak etc

Yeah I see where you're coming from. That's really helpful. I'm half way through an aft deck canopy project so don't want to make the job any harder.
 
+1 for cheap clear tarp, with the reinforcing threads to use as a guide. I’ve used it for cockpit cushion patterns, other in yard made a motorboat cover and Bimini using it to pattern.
 
The cheap blue tarpaulin that Plum pointed out from the high street DIY stores does work.. It's got what appears to be fibres within it that give it the directional stability..

I have used it for sprayhoods...

Remember to follow the Sailrite video in terms of double sided tape over the frames.

Always use something like insulating tape along the top of the frames first, then the double sided tape..

Or you will have an awful job later removing the double sided tape..
