Our Minds are made up and next winter we will leave the med and head for a winter sailing around the canaries islands , new grounds for us , Anchoring is our game , we normally anchor seven month a year some time longer ,
so I understand there no real safe anchorage or so people says , so taken that-in mind where do you run to when the wind blow hard from the south or the north ,
Or are there good safe anchorage ?
One man anchorages is another man night mare as we all know .
All suggestion would be great . Actually all advise about the Canaries would be very welcome. And if you happen to have a blog with good info on the islands we be interested to read it .
Thanks guys

A few years back I did a reconnoitre of all the main harbours and anchorages around Tenerife and Gomera which might be of interest (http://www.yachtsentinel.co.uk/Tenerife/tenerife.htm). With predominantly NE trade winds in winter punctuated by occasional westerly gales no anchorage or marina is bomb-proof apart from Santa Cruz: and that's often packed. So expect to move around as conditions change.

You'd do well to get hold of a copy of the RCC Pilotage Foundation "Atlantic Islands" (5th ed, 2011) which lists your options in all the islands. Though some of the places they mention are more suitable for local boats than a cruising yacht, and some marinas do not accept casual visitors.

We've been anchoring around the Canaries on and off since October and so far we've only seen two other British yachts 'on the hook' away from Santa Cruz DGC - so there might not be much of a response for more to post. There's a hardcore of Belgiums, Danes, French etc but I doubt that they log into this link.

The swell is forecast to hit 5m this weekend so we have decided to be prudent and comfortable by remaining on our berth in the marina at Puerto Tazacorte de la Palma and leave the anchor stowed a little longer.

There are plenty of good anchorages around there, and so long as you watch the wind and move anchorages as needed then you'll have no problems, being flexible is the name of game!

Las Palmas is good, and there are some good anchorages at the bottom end of Gran Canaria- not always the best view but safe! We just moved around as it suited us.
