Canal windlass spindle size

I am aware that BWB introduced a new standard lock spindle size some years ago. Are my old 1970's windlass's still usable?

This is not really the best forum to ask. "We" don't have anything as vulgar as lock windlasses on the Thames... (haha), but as an occasional canaler I'll try.

The short answer is (probably) - Yes. Mine (both large and small squares) bought in the 80's still fit. IMO spindle sizes are a complete muddle, some are square, some have tapers and even on the same canal....

I don't think you'll get any straighter answer here:- http://www.canalworld.net/forums/, but's always fun to look!

Thanks for the responses. I shall hang onto my "old ming". At least I can heave them out with my seasearcher when the crew stow them in the spurlash. Meantime I shall give canalworld net a spin having been confused by the rider to this forum: "A place to discuss boating issues specific to the Thames and other inland waterways"
