Canal Boat incident at Windsor

From Windsor Observer website.

Fire engines from Slough, Windsor and Langley rushed to Ham Island, in Old Windsor, at around 3.50pm this afternoon after a report of a runaway, cruiser-style motorboat coming loose from its moorings and careering down the Thames on its stern side.

The fire service - which had also drafted in a water rescue unit from Reading - finally managed to catch up with the boat near the Bells of Ouzeley pub, in Straight Road, and unsuccessfully attempted to stop the boat at the Old Windsor Lock.

Eyewitness Old Windsor ward councillor Lynne Jones said: “We saw two fire engines chasing the boat along the river. They went to Old Windsor Lock and then went back off again down towards Egham.”

The boat eventually came to a halt at the Bell Lock Weir near the Runnymede Hotel in Egham by which point it was upside down.

Police officers were also on scene to assist and nobody is believed to have been on the boat during the incident.

After the boat had come to rest, the scene was handed over to the Environment Agency.
