Can you download tracks from your Chartplotter?

I have Plan2Nav on my Galaxy Note 2
Used this for the first time recently.
It can create a gpx file which can be displayed in Google Earth.
(GE converts it to a kmz file which it keeps in it's 'my places' folder

Furuno TZT can export routes and tracks in CSV, GPX or KML.

How do you download to Google Earth?

I have a garmin to pc cable so fist i download from the garmin to my lappy. I then click on the file and when asked what to open it with specify google earth.

TBH you have me wondering a bit since its a year since i last did it but i know for certain that i have done it withou problem. If it is of real use to you, send me a pm and I will happily break out the lappy, run through the procedure and tell you the steps.

Being naive, I'm surprised that this is an issue with any fancy chart plotter, given how easy it is for me with my £100 quid Garmin72 handheld and my laptop. An interesting foible is that, although the normal behaviour is to give only a list of points (consistent with the documentation) if you download an active track before it is terminated you get the times and speeds at each point.

If you have a plotter which doesn't let you do the download it'd be only a modest investment to have a handheld too, and it's a useful backup in an emergency anyway.

Thanks Amulet - very right and very helpful. It begins to seem that the cheapest options provide the easiest track handling - starting with OpenCPN of course

Having found how difficult downloading from my SH 180 is. I now think the easiest solution is to use one of the many tracking apps available for free on my Android phone.

Simrad NSS allows backup (saving) and subsequent reloading of Track files in .gpx format on a Micro SD card.

I assume this also applies to the equivalent Navico, Lowrance and B&G units that share the same hardware platform.

GRP is transparent to radio waves; there is little difference in GPS performance between deck mounting and below decks antennae on a GRP boat. Other materials will be worse; steel or alloy would completely mask GPS signals, and I'd imagine that wood - especially if damp - might well attenuate the signal and give worse results.
