Hmmmm., interesting and also slightly dubious use of the word "Success".... and no, they dont get the same "pleasure", they cant Sir, why ? because you are still clinging to a capitalist dream.. your problem, not mine, but a gulf you will have to negotiate imho.

This is EXACTLY what I am referring to, you are indeed the epitomy. You may be, and probably are, a super guy, and guyess, dont get me wrong here.. I mean that.

Your boat is also probably fabulous, but what you will never do, is feel the basics of life in its most colourful sense, you probably will find it hard to understand some of the happiness and joy that others get from this life. and you will probably not stay the course.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not sure where to start here - your posts on this are not dissimilar to those that get a bit upset when someone talks about having TV on a boat - Boating is to get away from it all etc..

I too am on a reasonably big boat, and I am definitely clinging to a capitalist dream... in fact, I'm firmly glued to it. I also want a selection of home comforts on board ... UK TV, internet, telephone, Central heating, hot and cold running water, power on tap, you name it...... I definitely dont want to feel the basics of life on a permanent basis, and never have,(occassionally is fine). Can I fix stuff that goes wrong miles from anywhere? - so far so good, with much help from this forum, moa, and a few books on board.

Am I less happy than you? I couldnt be happier than I am at the moment! Will I give up? I cant imagine the thought of not wanting to wake up on the boat, rather than in a brick built residence back in England, or anywhere else for that matter. As I have said a few times, I am living my dream..... It might not be your dream.

It is not for anybody to say that there is a particular way that something should be done to make you happy, and it is not for anybody to decide what experiences should be experienced to make you happy. If what you do and how you do it, makes you happy, then that is how it should be done for any particular individual.

I think you need to live and let live a bit.... unless you have a persona for forums like this and are actually different in real life?

What started out as an excellent and potentially very informative thread has unfortunately descended into a pissing match regarding who’s got the best boat.

Captainslarty seems to have an bias towards ‘old traditional boats’ to the complete exclusion of anything new. I would like to point out that when his own boat was first built it would have been ‘new and of the latest modern materials. ’ GRP boats were considered to be nothing more than plastic toys for the boys by the traditionalists of the time and not to be taken seriously. I think it is fair to say that early GRP boats are heavier and thicker than modern boats because designers didn’t’ really know how much laminate was needed. Gel coats cracked more easily and more prone to osmosis.

I would have thought live aboard sailors to be rather more free spirited and tolerant than this thread seems to show. It is not the boat, not the money but attitude of mind that should define you.

The direction of this thread is no different to sad suburban 9 to 5 ers having a pissing match about what car is on their drive. Please god I hope you are not all like that.

I am sure captainslarty pre judges people by the boat they or on jus as maybe others pre judge him when they see an old boat with washing draped all over and rusty fuel cans on the side like some sort of water gypsy.

This reading dishearteningly seems to show there is no escape from the dogma and self opinionated bollocks that you get round ANY suburban dinner table! Now where can I get a list of anchorages that are large enough for one boat?

Richard, a very interesting take..

Let me dispell a few myths lol...

I love computers, I have 60" or so screen for the lcd projector for movies and flight sims et al..
60 lph watermaker, leccy winches, eberspacher, fitting round the boom furling for the main....
The new AP is an RM S2G with rotary underdeck drive, tillerpilot for the Hydrovane, st 4000 wheel as backup... superb hifi system etc.. I dont rough it...
we have hot n cold running pumped water etd etc.

But thats not it... really, for ME its not....

I dont think for one minute YOU are clinging to a capitolist dream, I can only base my opinions on the posts we have shared.

there is a big difference between guys like yourself who strive to do the things you need, and cheque book charlies..

/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

an intersting discussion, and at a level some will never reach, more to their loss... to appreciate without, it is best to have had "with", I have, I am truly happy and DO feel sorry for those of the different outlook, they seem to be trying to BUY into a dream/.. one which they will never truly comprehend or begin to.. thats the "new money"...

I feel like patting them on the head and waving goodbye lol..

I am SURE they feel the same, a gulf, a lcak of understanding, long may it be so, cos never the twain will really meet, just a different level in the social scale of their interprettation of liveaboard..

I am NOT right, my views are MINE, only... its just another veg to toss into the potluck.

you are NOT EVEN CLOSE to capitolist.. you, by your nature and openess are exploring, great to behold.

I do comfort, not capitolism, I do techy, not capitolism, I do my thing..
Nope, I AM me in all aspect of life... there is much written about the dream, but less is practiced in the realworld, yes, the dream is what YOU want... but be fair, the outbursts here are not totally from me, they are from the money set who feel outcast and hurt by certain analogies... its their problem R.

and it IS true, that there arte new layer in place, social ladders that were minimal in the past, the great british house price scandal has sorted that.. they dream, they want to do, but in their way.. kewl. but they also want a level playing field in social circles within the life they choose, they find it hard, becuase the barriers are self imposed.

Nice folks, shame about the outlook... for ME, but hey... be fair, and I will be, there is a growing class of people in the same "boat" so to speak, nothing wrong with that... on the surface, like buiding a detached "cottage" in a 'traditional fishing village' and extoling the virtues of the traditional fishing village..... what they dont comprehend is that the cottage they build is the beggining and the end of said traditional village....

Again, not a probelm really, the world is a BIG place...

Joe /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

and, Dave, my man, re read the thread.. you didn't define WHAT you want.. so you have options.. dont lay your guilt trip on me cos you bought the boatshow boat THEN decided to try liveaboard... you intimated at the beginning and hoped for justification, you didnt get it,,, tough, thats life.. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

one guy has gone and bought a Bav due to similar threads, good on him... he reads the posts, he doesnt get upset by a few quotes.. he makes his mind up.

You asked, you got...

I will discuss all day with you if you want to... I am not right.. I offer opinions for YOU to decide. you decided BEFORE you chose to ask for opinions... dont shoot the messanger... shoot the salesman and lack of savvy dood...

LOOK at the REAL selecction of REAL boats here.. you cocked up, you jumped before dipping yer toes, no worries, it happens to a lot, dont ask and THEN try to justify your misguided choice.

Hapy sailing /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I didn't start this thread Joe.

I didn’t ‘jump in’ either. People suggest I listed what I wanted from the boat and I did that. With the budget I have I chose the best compromise. Not only do I want to live aboard the boat I want to go sailing and enjoy it. I had a couple of trips on old bilge keel boats but they left me unable to ‘but my money where my mouth is.’ Maybe in a few years time one of those will be the right one. I prefer balanced argument Joe. If your boat was the best one then nothing else would have been built! Over time it would have captured market share in this CAPTIALIST world in which you and I live!

Again, a very lopsided view of capitolist Dave.. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

not the case, and you know it,,, dont fight it, let it flow, sell the duffer if its not the ideal NOW..
as for my boat, well, there are only a mass of unlightened people out there lol...

same as the vast majority of boats in this thread, hidden gems not featured in practical advert owner or yachting by numbers monthly.... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

HOW can you honestly say you didnt JUMP Dave... ?

tell me if I am wrong, BUT, you bought the thing BEFORE asking for opinions.

Opinions are like arseholes Dave, everyone has one...

/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you honestly believe you live outside the capitalist word then you have the lopsided view. Where do you think that pension comes from? What makes you think it is not linked to the value of stocks and property? We all drink from the capitalist bowl just some get more than others. But my point is. Does it matter. My question was regarding budget. Every dream has a price Joe. My mention of the ‘wrong kind of boat’ was tongue in cheek. I will admit that you have made me question my choice which has provoked further investigation, but I keep coming back to the choice I made. Even Bill Cooper admits that his previous ideas on ‘the right boat’ are no longer relevant. Anyway, if I am just ‘blowing in the wind’ at least I can sail a bit closer to it than you. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Kind regards Dave

I was enjoying reading about all the different types of boats that forumites were / are living on (or are intending to).

But we seem to have strayed far away from this original topic.... could we bring it back please?

And...... I have noticed that many folk have just mentioned the type of boat they have without going into much detail - perhaps because they are worried about being shot down for singing their fine vessel's praises too much?

If this is the case, please dont be! Please do post photos, stories, anecdotes about anything that makes your boat wonderful for living on board.

HI Richard

Well my desire to follow this life style was rekindled about 2 years ago and I have giving a lot of thought as to where I am at the moment regarding sailing and keel boats versus fin and spade.
I knew i wanted something light and responsive and pleasurable to sail. I had considered motor sailer type boats but felt they didn’t either motor or sail particularly well. It seems to me that if wind is the engine then efficient design is needed. However, I accept that 8 1/2 ton or so may be light given the extra weight that living aboard may bring but I am prepared to accept that (for now). It is easy to feel the need for a heavy displacement globe trotter but how many of these are in fact just mooching around the med and isn’t that a bit like Chelsea tractor syndrome? As for stowage I look around me in this caravan that has been home for 2 years and know I will have much more space on just about any boat I chose. May not be the perfect choice but we don’t live n a perfect world (well most of us anyway). I still remember as in the late 70’s old-timers trying to convince my dad new boats where no good. Funny how those ’new’ boats are today’s old boats and the same is said. So in answer to your question I have chosen a Dufour 425.

Regards Dave

Rob!
Evening Star's back home? How did the trip go? Did she fall apart?

[/ QUOTE ]
The simple answer is
Yes

The decks are shot.
There is a lot of water damage down below.
The floor is lifting in the cabin it must of been glued and pinned but the glue has given up after 30+ years and the pins have snapped.
So all the floor is lose
All the portholes leak
The chain plates leak
all the cushions are rank. The bottoms have rotted from sitting in water and they stink.
I have a dehumidifier on at the moment trying to dry it out but everytime it rains the water gets in again.
I'm trying to replug all the screws on the deck but 90% are showing and it's taking longer than i thought.
I'm hopping that the water is tracking down the screw holes and then finding it's way inside. So if i fix this she will stay dry inside so i can get on with that.

Did you ever go inside her in Gib?

Mmmmmmmm I think I did that, looked at a dozen boats and bought the 12th one. Normally I spend weeks/months/years researching before I buy (cameras, hifi etc) but not this time. Doh!

I asked about (in here too) but only found one other owner of a Comar Comet in the UK.

I've had, and still have much work to do to get her fit for living but I got her at a reasonable price and I'm loving her more each time I sail her.
She's well built, heavy, yet pleasingly fast and not run-o-the-mill.

It'll be a big change to sell up the bricks and mortar and sail away but then I did live in an old (1965 Bedford Embassy) bus for years before doing that capitalist thing so I'm used to roughing it......

I do pretty much all the work myself and periodically go a light tinge of green each time I see a new Oyster sail by fresh out of Fox's but I've got what I've got an that will do. At the end of the day the I bought the boat to take me and my small family on an adventure, it's what's outside that matters..................

My ideal live aboard would be a second hand steel Dutch built yacht of around £300K. I say second-hand because any flaws in the steel fabrication would be starting to show which may have been there from manufacture. Also there is a good chance that such a boat would retain it’s initial investment value when sold. However such a yacht is outside my budget so I guess an AWB will have to do....for now. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
