The Fairlight incident was quite true, though it happened 30 years ago. Perhaps I should have known better, for wasn't it E.E.Middleton who complained when anchoring off Hastings back in the 1890's that the longshoremen there were so dishonest that they'd steal the teeth out of your mouth given half a chance.

You don't really have to go that far back to a time where a yacht in trouble really was likely to be considered fair game. A while back I posted an extract from a piece by Maurice Griffiths describing how the crew of a yacht aground in the Thames Estuary had to use boat-hooks to prevent fishermen from Margate boarding and looting. Of course, the same remains true in many parts of the world today.
