why when there are 3 boats in a totally secluded anchorage, miles from anywhere, where only three boats can fit, the innermost one decides to hoist his black ball?

The same reason people have no smoking stickers stuck firmly to the centre of their dashboards.

They are showing you their personality for free, so you don't have to ask /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I suppose that it is conceivable that when the others drag onto him/her or some lunatic comes straight through the other boats and t-bones him/her that the insurance company might claim that they were not complying with the regs if the shape wasn't being shown and therefore divide the payout by two or whatever.

Call me a cynic, but I am one of those who try to remember to stick correct shapes up - just to cover my back I suppose...

Re: wind-up merchant replies

oh, i'd definitely do this. It would show that i had a black ball, the others didn't, or that I knew the correct shapes, the others didn't. I might take down the dayshapes and ensign at 9pm sharp and put on the anchor light too. The other two would go bananas and probably write to a magazine, or more likley, seeing as I would be doing things correctly and they weren't, they'd put some indignant "why on earth" post on a bulletin board somewhere.

To really really wind up the people who don't want nor need any help docking, and who don't bother with flag etiquette too much, or who don't raise anchor balls... another ruse is when they come alongside in the marina, make sure your entire crew rushes up on to the deck with roving fenders, as if the arrival is a hopeless helm. They really really hate this.

Re: wind-up merchant replies

While we're at it, lets get rid of bowlines and clove hitches- they might show we have some knowledge- use granny knots for everything. Riding lights are a bit the same- they show we know it's dark and don't want other boats to bump into us. Engine checks are also a waste of time and should definately be outlawed as they are endorsed in RYA courses, and after all we only do them to impress other people on the boat. I also hate people who move their halyards from the mast to somewhere else to avoid annoying other people- this just shows far too much consideration. S*d it- lets all stay at home and be smug in the knowledge we know it all. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: wind-up merchant replies

Same here. Think of it not as a signal but a magic eye designed to ward off fishermen on the lookout for a promising piece of salvage.

I was once boarded off Fairlight (Sussex) on the pretext that without an anchor ball the yacht was "abandoned". Only a threat to fire flares prevented me being forcibly towed in. I'd almost forgotten this when it nearly happened again two years ago. We off the Belgian coast waiting for the tide, when a fishing boat came charging up to us, to turn away in disgust as the ball went up.

That does make me laugh, I doubt their claim would get very far in the courtroom however (unless of course there was no-one on board) :)
