Can anyone tell me the name and make of this stuff

Thanks

Thanks for all your replies.
It looks certain that the recommended product is Arbomast BR which unfortunately only comes in a teak or grey colour, and that if I wished I could also use the tape version which is also Butyl based and comes in white.

I think the significant point is that both these products remain flexible, and do not bond to the grp or the aluminium frame. Whereas a product like Sikaflex for instance would require a tremendous effort to remove in the future.

Thanks again.

It is not worth penny pinching on this job so use the recommended stuff. Make sure to mask all round on both surfaces leaving a neat even gap between the tapes and don't apply too much sealant, then have a bucket or big bag handy when you are peeling off the masking tape. makes tooling the joint and cleaning up much easier.

I have used Seelastik oil based sealant from builders merchants for windows in two boats and also for log impellors and engine cooling water hull inlets with no problems. Excess is removed easily with white spirit and it remains flexible. A much cheaper and easy solution.

From the mouth of one of the horses....

When I was putting the 'windows' page on the Corribee website together I got in touch with Stuart Curtis of Houdini Windows, who had this to say in June 2009:

We absolutely do not recommend Sikaflex as if the window ever needs to be removed for any reason, you will not be able to without damaging either the frame or the boat. We recommend a non setting sealant such as Arbomast BR. This cures to a chewing gum like consistency giving a watertight seal, but will not form an adhesive bond therefore the window can be removed safely years later with no risk of damage to either the frame or the vessel. Another good product is Bear tape, but this is only available in 30m rolls, although it is not expensive.
The Sikaflex problem became such a headache for us that we now supply a tube of Arbomast BR with all our hatches, and any that are fitted with Sikaflex are no longer warrantied.
I hope this is useful to you and welcome any comments you may have regarding this.

Many thanks and kind regards
Stuart

..which confirms many of the posts above.

I just fitted new alloywindows in my Sabre 27, i used a non setting butyl rubber Seamseal CV made by Hodgsons sealants. Got it from a firm called fix fast.
Regarding preformed Mastic tape, it sounds great but when you pierce it for the window screws & try & insert them it just balls round the screws & drags the tape out of the joint.
In short i found it an abolute sodding disaster, Stick with the mastic!

sealant

go to a good builders yard and ask for sikalex sealant it is in a red and yellow tube costs about £6 a tube ,it works .it is not marine sikaflex hence the low cost.

Still an adhesive polyurethane sealant that'll stick the widows on just as permanently. Not what's wanted.

Quote the product details and we can look it up. Sika make hundreds of these things.

Red and yellow are Sika's trademark colours.

Arbomast BR appears to be the correct solution for a non-setting sealant.

I've not had time to visit chandleries this week - It is something they would normally stock or has anyone found a good supplier, either online or on the South Coast.

Many thanks Martin.

Christchurch boat shop (01202- 482751) started to stock it last year. Bit of a trek from Portsmouth. The other option is builder merchants as Arbomast BR was originally for the building trade I believe.

Thank you. I should have looked first.

Vic did say that Port Solent have it at £4.90 per tube.

and in Southampton, Shamrock have it at £4.50 per tube.. (but out of stock)

So it's the correct stuff to use and cheaper than most other sealants!

I did notice though that the resapol data sheet for it states a minimum thickness and minimum width of 6mm - so I guess a thick bead needs to be left between the aluminium frame and the surface the window is mounted to.

I never had a data sheet but then window frames did have a grove to 'trap' the sealant. With deck fittings I countersink the fixing holes to strap the stuff. Also mask of area where sealant is not required and use a generous quantity to fix items. Most of the leaks on itmes I have fitted have been due to lack of sealant !
