Thought I had seen this on here somewhere, tried searching but no results.

If a Cmap card is out of date and in need of updating, can the coverage be changed to a totally different area. In other words, is it more economical to buy old chips and have them changed, or to buy new one's outright?

OK. The simple answer is maybe. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
If you have the same size memory card as the latest chart for the same area.
This also assumes that the chart area is the same as many of the older ones have changed.
If your memory card is not the same as is required for the new chart, you can still 'trade in' your old one.
I have used a chart of the Ionian and had it changed to the Gulf of Lyon with no exchange needed. However, when it came to upgrading to the latest Adriatic chart, I just ended up buying a new card as the trade in was so small.

Yes - I have done it on many occasions. However, be aware that you can often sell a C-map cartridge on eBay for considerably more than the part exchange rate.

It\'s about time that.....

...someone broke the cartel on these upgrades. Totally against the principles of free competition. Resale Price Maintenance (RPM) was outlawed in this country many decades ago yet chart dealers still spurt out the well rehearsed line: "That is the authorised price sir. We couldn't charge any less if we wanted to" WHO is "authorising" this price and WHO is forcing these independent business people to perform a restrictive practice? How much does it really cost to run a chip through a reader/writer? NOT £109 I'm sure.
