Can 27 foot for £10k be done?

I am a bit out of touch with the £10k end of the market and I wondered if anyone could give some advice?

A friend has a son who is making his way in the world and has decided to buy his forst boat. Friend has asked me if I know if he can get 27 foot minimum for £10k. My immediate response was that this would be pushing it, and all boats at that money would be older late 60's perhaps 70's built and potentially in need of lots of uprgading and loveing care and attention.

Anyone got any ideas as to what designs/boats to look at.

Otherwise it will just be a case of doing a search on boats in that price range and see what comes up?
 
I think you'll find lots if you look around the boatyards.
I've seen dozens about that size and price. I ended up with a 30-footer at £9k needing 3k spent but there are plenty ready to go. Yes, age is a factor but there's a lot to be said for the older GRP boats - they're thicker and stronger than newer boats it seems and often lovingly cared for.
The sailing magazines seem intent on telling us that we should be spending upwards from £50K - nonsense. Even when they discuss the cheap end of the market they talk of £20k. Again, nonsense.
You'll find loads of entry level boats. Especially as many people have lots of money and are happy to start on boats of 30+ foot and have large marine mortgages to cover them. Meaning the small boat market is full of spare 20-somethings waiting for a home.
My old boat is for sale, too. 25 foot Wing, well thought of, price without the broker £7,400.
Remember to look at lots of boats as there are countless available for this price.
 
For this money I cannot recommend an Albin Vega highly enough.

10K will get you one which has the original old volvo and may look a little scruffy but is ready for sea and extrememly seaworthy. (Get an older Mk II, not a MK 1, as they are eaier to re-engine when/if the time comes)

Contact Steve Birch of VAGB who usually knows of Vegas for sale in the UK, or if you are feeling adventurous look for one in Sweden and bring it back - they are quite a bit cheaper there. (And a LOT cheaper on the E. cost of the USA)

We paid 11K for Fairwinds and during the next two seasons sailed her to the Outer Hebrides and round Ireland without spending any serious money on refitting. We have now spent a bit of money on sails and engine,and have taken her on a cruise of the E. Atlantic (currently in the Canaries, next stop Madeira then the Azores).

T'other thing is that this sort of boat often doesn't make it into the back pages of the mags, but go online to places like Boats & Outboards, or to brokers' own sites, and you'll find quite a lot of choice.

Some good ideas and thanks for that. I understand that friends son insists on not less than 27 foot. I have e-mailed him a few references including an Elizabethan 29 that looks a lot of boat for the money.

Agree with the comments ref magazines. We have worked our way up from a SCOD that cost me £2,700 (and nearly two years work to make her seaworthy!) We did sell her for just short of £10k though.
 
A number of folkdancers have been in different brokerages for considerably less than £10k. IMHO a fine seaworthy craft although the looks are not for everybody.

Macwester 27 or 28 both of which sail a lot better than the 26 (I've got a 26 which I paid £4.750 in need of a little paint and tlc but witha new Beta 20)

There's a Westerly Griffon that I know of going for £13,500 but could be haggled down. Not a great example of the class, though.

Macwesters

just to name a few of 27 and up that would be in that pricing ... look around and you'll find under the 10K ... even look at ones over and make offer ... you'll be surprised what some people will accept !
