A mate of mine is purchasing one of these, 18ft long with a Petrol Mercruiser of about 120hp.

As a rag and stick man myself I could do with some input here.

Are they any good? Where's he going to use all that power on the Norfolk Broads?

What's it going to steer like at 3-4 mph? Am I right in thinking that fuel logistics may be a problem?

Never heard of Campions. Byron may know and, indeed, if he's not heard of them, then they don't exist.)

I think one or two of the Broads (Oulton? Breydon Water?) are derestricted but otherwise the boat doesn't seem ideally suited for the purpose. Assuming it's got an outdrive, steering will be, ahem, imprecise at the speeds you mention, though more or less controllable, and you get used to it.

I think you're right about petrol - probably a question of lugging it to the boat in cans. Good for the arm muscles, though.

On the plus side, I believe the dreaded Boat Safety Scheme doesn't apply in the Broads. Yet.............

Speed limit on the Broads is generally 6mph dropping to 5 or 4 where there are houses and moorings. There is no speed limit on Breydon Water and also on sections of the Yare between Brundall and Reedham where Brooms test their boats and signposts on the side of the river proudly proclaim which sections you may waterski on! I believe however you need a special permit for these fast bits except Breydon.

As for the boat, it doesn't sound ideal for broads use and if its berthed on the northern rivers up by Wroxham or Horning he's got a good few hours slow cruise before he gets anywhere he can open her up.

The 44 footer I used on the broads had around 50hp of searing diesel power and with all windows closed and heads tucked behind the screen could amble up to 7mph if pushed, so i suspect he's a little overpowered!

I am not familiar with Campion never even heard the name before. I will however say this. If the vessel is to be used solely on the Broads then it is eminently unsuitable. The plugs will oil up and I would assume that just ticking over it will just about exceed the speed limits. As regards steering, without knowing hull configuration it is hard to pass comment.
Fuel consumption will be minimal at those speeds. Make sure the craft has a current BSS certificate.

Seen a boat make called Global. "campion" I think refers to the model. They did a closed deck and I think a cuddy. Previous post may be correct with Canadian I thought American but can't be sure. Similar looking to early Bayliner and the like. one I saw was circe 89 ish. Totally agree with other posts totally unsuitable for Broads. However us Windermere chaps will soon be in the same boat so to speak.

Hi

Campion are a Canadian range of sportsboats.

They have been tested in the UK by a couple of the magazines and as far as I know go to Southampton Boat show etc.

They are supposed to be very good sports boats but IMHO I think to use it on the Norfolk broads would be a waste. I have been in one very briefly and they seem much the same as most of the other decent sportsboats manufacturers. Only thing I would say is that being relatively unkown not sure how they would sell on if that was wanted at any point.

There are some manufacturers making similar size boats now with 1.7 litre diesel engines ( is it the peugeot /citreon one?). I have no knowledge of diesel ( to my mind they should stay in buses) but they may be more suited to pottering about.

Campion make good quality boats, and I would wager good money that it is powered by the mercruiser 3.0L 130HP engine. It needs that amount of power because its a "sports boat" and capable of around 35kts and it is built to deliver water-sports activities. And therein lies the clue.... The hull is a sports boat planing hull and totally unsuited to pottering about. Planing hulls handle badly when not on the plane and 130HP is a complete waste, it won't do the engine any good. For the broads, you need a displacement hull, like your yacht, and fitted with a lower power diesel motor, he will get endless hours of enjoyment pottering about for very little money.

Campion are moderate to good quality North American (Canadian) boats built by a company with no ethics.

In the nineties, Campion 'splashed' a Velocity 26 hull and called it their own. Steve Stepp, designer, builder and President of Velocity Powerboats was not amused.

I love my Campion 595i from RnB Marine!

Hi all,

Im not sure if this helps or not but i just want to say how much i love my first boat. I bought it from RnB Marine in Puerto banus and it is a Campion 595i Sport Cabin and its super. She is fitted with the Volvo Penta 4.3Gxi motor which at 230hp i thought would be a little underpowered for a 7m boat but it isnt and handles like a dream. Nb. I use the boat in the Med in Sunny Spain so even when the sea kicks up, the boat sitll handles well and myself an family remain safe and sound on board. I have not just come on here to gloat, i want to tell everyone how great Ben Caplan has been at RnB Marine in Marbella and his team, Neil, David and Carina who have all been such a great help to us with the purchase of our first boat. I promised i would tel everyone how good the service is and thats what im doing. If anyone out there is looking to buy a boat big or small and have it in Spain, DONT DO IT WITHOUT TALKING TO RNB MARINE FIRST!!! Great Service and Great Advice and Great Follow Up Service.

Thanks RnB Marine and yes you were right, im already planning my move up to the dayboat next!!! haha
