Now I don't think that is quite fair! Raymond Wall was a pretty good designer, too, and do you have in mind CE or CA Nicholson? And do if you do, do you count the SCOD, which
is not a very pretty boat?
Seriously, I don't think anyone will doubt that a C&N yacht built to order rather than on spec. (some of their spec. boats are pretty ordinary) and built under the supervision of Watts and Jurd is a "classic".
Coming to the GRP ones the 43 and 55 are classic plastic all right - very pretty and capable boats. The 32 is OK and her bigger relations are all well built practical boats, but I would not say classic plastic.
I thought that boats over 25 years were regarded as 'Classics' ?
But then again looks are in the eye of the beholder.
I must say, most yachts which have turned my head have been Nicholsons.
Agreed Nicholson have produced more than their fair share of boat which could stir the heart. But they've had a their Failures that well, they're adventurous Forte into building boats for the Royal Navy when all will winches had pulled out of the decks because they got the pads in the wrong place! And of course there was the series of Nick 35 s which you couldn't remove the engine through the hatch, it's a pity that Perkins at the same time had problems with their crankshaft and all the engines fitted to these birds needed new crane shots which had to be fitted on sweet!
As I've always said classic is in the eye of be the holder and good designers get everything right.
