Worth a punt on the cheap one?

Ive got the suction one in all the cars for my iphone no problems about 20 quid each, but i did buy a cheapo for my old heap, the whole lot fell on the floor, luckily no damage to the phone, but if i was on the boat at the time!
If got binned.

I got a cheap one from Maplin. It was rubbish, The rubber cup was far too stiff and wouldn't deform enough to provide a proper seal.
It didn't matter as I bought it for the ball/socket which is just about man enough for the job I wanted it for.

I've got a suction type to hold my Garmin twatnav on the car windscreen. It regularly comes detached in hot weather so there is no way I'd use one with a good camera in a position where it could fall far.

Thanks for the comments. I only want something to use with my Xacti waterproof video camera on the boat, and having found some good YouTube reviews of the cheap one I've ordered one. If I use it on the outside of the hull I'll make sure I've got a leash on it just in case it decides to fall off.

Watch out for those waterproof video. I had one and tried it in 1' of water. It leaked! Camera now useless. I checked all the openings and they were all correctly closed. What a joke. Complete waste of money. Hopefully you will be more lucky!

I did some u/w filming with mine last year and it was fine. I've no real need to do more, but I'd be confident that it'll take a substantial splashing.

Are the suction type mounts not designed to be used on either glass or vehicle bodywork which I would have thought are a lot smoother than gel coat? The last satnav I bought came with such a mount and also had a little round very smooth disc of plastic for sticking onto the dashboard if required. I have a selection of clamp type mounts for my cameras which, to date, have not failed (but I do fit a tether to the camera as well).

Go Pro has been down to 40 feet with me.

Looks to be the same one based on the writing on the base unit.... it's not 100% clear but appears to be the same??

Have a look again....the ball mount in the regular priced one is matt black, and if it's like my Gecko mount, slightly abrasive, on the cheapo one it's a shiny silver. The screw mount is also different. No guesses as to which one would be more secure ;)

I would also put money on the plastic being different, less solid.

It really depends on what you're attaching to it, and where you're attaching it.

I've got the Fat Gecko by delkin with dual suction mounts on. Used correctly it holds the camera solid at 40+ knots on an airborne motorboat :D
