Only wusses have to stand in the well at the Oxford end.

I should know as I worked on a punt hire station in my summer hols for 2 years when I was a lad.

Its a well known fact that the Oxford end is used so that they can use a longer pole to compensate for their diminutive stature.....

Hang on a minute, surely if you stand lower down in the well, you would need a shorter pole??

Anyway it is perfectly obvious that if a flat deck is provided at one end, THAT is the place to stand. Otherwise why not build them the same at each end?

I thought it was to stop the undergrads slipping off when pi$$ed on pimms! Used to work for me anyway!
