Dug the spare engine out of store now the season is nearly upon us. Horror of horrors its got a bad case of garage rash. Little bit peeved as I spent a couple of weeks spare time reconditioning it. Not is all lost tho as the crank is fine in that the journals have not suffered. Biggest prob is the bores and rings. Bit miffed as I'd never run this lump. It was purely there to limit down time while the sun shines!

So had a hunt about and picked up another engine complete. I'll do the usual and pull it apart, rebore it and bung in a the "old" new pistons with new rings. They're one size over anyway so I've got to rebore the new block.

Problem is the head. In the last head I went slighty larger on the exhaust valves so I'd like to keep the head tho the cam went a bit rusty on the lobes.I can get get a new cam for the road car for peanuts. Only thing I can't find out is if the duration and lift of the road cam is the same as the volvo "marine" cam.
The engine is an old Volvo 145a petrol based on the B23 block. Anyone got an idea?

Barry - this is an overhead cam engine isn't it? If so the simplest way may be to measure the lift on the valves with a dial guage and compare with say a Haynes manual figure for the lift on the car variant(s). If the lift is the same then you can get a rough idea of the duration in cam degrees with the dial guage and then double it for crankshaft degrees/duration.

In general terms I'd have thought Volvo's requirements for the marine and car engines would be very similar, good midrange torque and not to peaky so they may well have used a common cam profile.

You can get the old data sheets off the volvo site but it doesn't go into cam profile detail unfortunately.... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I would if I had a road cam to comapare it with. That was my first thought. Prob there is that the head off the road car I dumped with all the other stuff I'm not going to use. Of course, according to sods law, I only thought of that AFTER dumping the old head. Not a clever move! I haven't got a Haynes for a volvo because I never had a volvo....car that is.

Theres a volvo tuning site that list every damn cam except the one I want. Typical!! Looking at the marine cam its fairly mild which agrees with what you say. Seeing as one for a car is less than 50 quid I might just stick it in anyway and see how it goes.

Didn't think I suggested that (although even easier if you had had one), but Haynes manual for £10 from local Halfords should list the figures......

Re: Have you tried the Local Library??

I've sorted it sort of! I got hold of a road cam and compared it with the cam volvo use in the marine derivative of the engine. Theres not difference at all. Interestingly the cam from bot marine and car dealers has the same part number but theres almost 60 quid difference in the price.
I got mine from a local supplier who charged a lot less than either of the volvo agents. So now rebuild of the spare engine can begin in earnest.
