I intend to put a cam cleat on the mast i will prob have to use self tappers and i am concerned about corrosion between the aluminium mast and the stainless screws any ideas on how to avoid this problem

a calcium plumbate based paste

Where stainless steel fasteners or other parts are in
contact with aluminium parts the joints should be smeared with a zinc
chromate corrosion inhibiting paste such as Duralac. This is a bright yellow
paste, you can buy a tube from a chandler or from the internet for about
If stainless steel fasteners fitted into aluminium are exposed to salt

Can you get calcium plumbate paste?

Duralac is barium chromate, dunno if it ever was zinc chromate but its barium chromate now

Duralac paste (yellow, and can be messy if not applied carefully) or Tef-gel paste (white, and not so messy). Both prevent galvanic corrosion between dis-similar metals.

I would suggest you invest in a 4mm or 3/16 ww tap (tap a thread) and fit metal thread screws rather than self tappers. It mans you cut a proper thread then treat with Duralac between all faying surfaces. olewill

The yellow stuff (known in the trade as canary s**t) is rubbish - hard to apply and does not last for ever.

The premium product is Tefgel (http://www.duogen.co.uk/Tefgel.htm). It comes from the aerospace industry and lasts for years. I used it on my mast fittings 6 years ago and their is no sign of corrosion whatsoever.

It's reasonably priced, lasts forever and easy to use. Just do it.

Drill and tap the mast and use S/S machine screws dipped in Duralac. I've fitted three Spinlock cam cleats this way 2years ago, so far no problem - and the Duralac appears to be working.

You can get machine screws in many sizes and lengths; whereas the self tappers will have a sharp point/cutting face to 'self tap', if they are too long they will chafe any ropes inside the mast that choose to snag on them.
