Calor. Gas.

My gas locker was designed to take a couple of 4.5k bottles. It would take major work with a grinder to solve the problem, plus all the remedial work after.

As was ours but the more expensive refill Gaz ones fit no problems other than the cost to refill, by Calor filling stations and with same gas going into the 4.5kg calor bottles I still have a 4.5kg 98% full another empty and a full Gaz with adapter valve to calor regulator. Might take the full one to Antiques Roadshow for a valuation. :ROFLMAO:

Still think it time the RYA looked into this debacle.
 
Just done my first transfer to 4.5kg bottle, connected hoses, sat 15kg upside down on chair, small one on floor, opened up and 20 minutes later scales showed 4.3kg transfer. Little bit of release when removing hose. Job easy and now covered cost of hoses and 50% of new gas, next one break even and next one free.

Sounds like a way forward without switching gas bottle type completely. The transfer kit you used, is this something you made up or purchased and if so where can I purchase? As seems to be the situation across Kent, you can get the 15Kg bottles but re-filled 4.5’s not a chance!

I told the RYA last yer, and the response was along the lines of "(yaawwwn) oh, really?" Hopeless support for cruising now, they are only interested in dinghy racing.
 
I've managed to get hold of a 3.9 propane exchange! But I connected it and it leaked ?
As it is a metal to metal joint I can only think that it has deformed or there is something holding the joint apart. Little bit of verdigris in the bottle but would that be enough to hold the joint open? Is there a recognised way of addressing this?

The regulator has worked fine for several years of bottles.

Not sure which connection you refer to.The Calor propane one has no rubbeer seal washer like for the butane 4.9, but is a taper thread Perhaps the thread has been damaged somehow as in previously cross threaded by previous owner/user?

So it's the thread that seals; and not the conical male (regulator) and female (bottle) connection?
 
I’m sure its the cone that seals, you may have a small bit of scoring on either hose cone or bottle valve

Two bottles. Old one looks cleaner/ newer. New one has more of a connection scoring half way towards the valve. But this wasn't a tiny leak. It fair hissed out. Bit less on tightening but still clearly audible

I would imagine that it didn't leak when they filled it, or otherwise they would have rejected it? Could you borrow another pigtail to try? If the cylinder is faulty, then it is a hazard and Calor should replace it. It is after all their property.

Turns out that it was the regulator thread. Verdigris over the winter meant it wouldn't do up tightly enough despite being tight.?Taper thread?

Having visited a few suppliers and got the ususal; no gas; no exchanges for non like for like bottles; no you cant buy a new bottle, I telephoned the 0800662663 to give Calor a piece of my mind. However I went through to a Calor delivery centre in Arundel who said he was quite happy to exchange my 7kg butane for a 3.9kg propane. Will be delivered to my office monday or tuesday at worst, no charge for delivery. Should have said my office is in Crawley but they said they deliver all over Sussex.

GBD Arundel (my local Calor dealer) told me earlier this week they "hadn't had 4.5kg butane cylinders for a year and weren't expecting them back". Didn't enquire about 3.9 as that'd need a new regulator and I only bought the 4.5 & regulator from them last year when I couldn't fit my existing 7kg. Plus I'm not sure that my Plastimo Coral is OK with it (most boat cookers seem to be, but I want to be certain...)
I've heard various reasons - a consignment of new cylinders is stuck in Turkey; a batch from Turkey was defective; Calor's dog ate the shipping order ...insert other bolleaux here.... Flogas,& Safegas & Gaslow must be laughing all the way to the bank.
Supply seems random - GBD Arundel & Chichester Camping World haven't got them but South Western fuels near Exeter "have 4.5s 95% of the time".
What a poorly handled mess.
 
The 2.7 Kg Gaslow cylinders are just about the same size as the Camping Gas Cylinders.
Refill around £4 to £5.

Presumably you refill with Autogas. Are there any safety issues with filling stations allowing the refilling of cylinders that are not fitted in a vehicle?

I have heard that autogas is in declining use so perhaps not a forever solution.

This year I have had no issues with obtaining 907 refills and now have two full spares which should last the rest of the year. It seems to me the bottle gas industry is not and never has been competitive as the suppliers keep the cost artificially high. I don't blame retailers for the prices .

3x 907 refills purchased this year at a cost of over £100 for about £15 worth of gas.
On the other hand the price of other things for the boat makes this cost seem relatively unimportant. I will be needing some diesel today and expect to use almost 200 litres tomorrow.
 
I have successfully filled the cylinders at Morrisons with out any problems (apart from them not having any Autogas 1st time of trying)
Just held up the Cylinder for the cashier to see and he enabled the pump.
There is also a camp site near me who can fill with LPG - mainly for camper vans with built in systems but he would be happy to fill the cylinders (if he has some gas)

Sorry only just seen this thread again. It was GBD who sorted me out. I have bought another 7kg butane off ebay so hopefully they will still be able to swap for a new 3.9.
