Update for all those kind enough to provide advice and support - having cleaned the mechanism over the winter and fitted a temporary tiller connection point to the new tiller I set out for a test in the Solent last Friday and (having got the wind vane the right way round) succesfully sailed across the Solent from the mainland to the island. 
Dying/variable winds meant I struggled to get it to sail the boat back, so there is still work to do on getting it working reliably all the time, but I now know she can sail the boat on a steady course, the rest is practise and experience to get the best from the system...
