Calling the coatguard by DSC?

I just had a go at entering the MMSI for Swansea CG on my new Raymarine 240E

It won't seem to let me enter it as it starts 00 - full list of CG MMSI's here

Now on RIB-Panther I had a nice ICOM, amd all the CG stations were pre-programed - I also remeber that when calling a CG by DSC you did not have to set the working channel as this is set by the CG.

How many people (comercial or leisure) call CG by DSC? (not many Raymarine users I suspect!)

Is there a DSC spec that has specific bits about MMSI's starting 00? - Like they can not be user programed - or don't have to set the working channel?

No Sorry, i dont call swansea on DSC, we only use it between our own vessels - but then again swansea CG are not that *busy* so voice calls get through.

My mate has done it, he programmed the number then just did a normal call (at least that what i think he did)

Oh Colin!! All UK Coastguard stations MMSI's start with 00. I've not come acroos the probeem with other DSC sets having a problem programming a "00" prefix into the directory.

On my Icom 601 it let me enter CG MMSI and it auto picks the channel to use for reply hopes this helps
As a new boy (old man) I buy of the PBO best buys due to lack of knowledge + (old & thick)

I use a Silva DSC, and don't get any problems calling Swansea CG The set aotomatically changes channel to the one set by the CG
Not that I call the coastguard very often of course Ahem!!!

Here's a table with the MMSI prefixes

First Digit(s) Meaning

"0" The MMSI will call a group of ships
"00" The MMSI will call a group of coast stations
"1" Reserved for INMARSAT "A" satellite terminals
"2"-"7" The MMSI will call an individual vessel
"8" Reserved for groups among neighboring nations
"9" Reserved for groups within an individual nation

So a group MMSI starts 0, CG starts 00 and normal "ships" in the UK start 2 + country code.

The MMSI numbers which can be issued in the UK range from starting with 232 and run thru to 235.

Just to clarify this,

The first 3 digits of a ship station MMSI number are its Marine Identication Digit (MID) this identifies the vessel's country of origin. In the UK we have 4 MIDS available they are 232, 233, 234 and 235.

Already answered on ribnet but just to make sure no one misses out. The "country code" or Marine Identification Digit (MID) to give it its proper name is the first three digits ie 232, 233, 234 235 (these are the UK's MIDs) if you have any other combination it is not a UK MID.

Raymarine 240e - Check your software ver!

Great News!!!!!

My new Raymarine Radio has turned up (partly my fault for being away recently) and I installed and tested it last night. The software now seems to have been corrected and all DSC functions now are working

I Can now

1) Store the CG MMSI's in the "Phonebook"
2) make a ship to shore call (ie to the CG) via the phonebook or direct MMSI entery
3) Select a vessel from to the Phonebook and select "Position request"

I made a DSC call to Swansea CG last night - and it all worked well!!

To check your radio to see if you have old software Select Menu - System Information - Software

Old Version = v1.15, 12 Aug 2004
Can't make DSC Calls to shore stations, Can't store CG stations in phonebook

New Version = v1.17, 15 Feb 2005
All DSC functions now seem to function
