I am not going to Holland this year, may just mooch around the south east and hop over to calais area if weather is ok
Is it safe with all those illegals hanging around the port area for my young family - discuss!

David - what I meant was that the presence of illegals is not likely to make it any more unsafe that anywhere else.

Is Calais worth a visit by yacht (been there on ferry of course and day-tripping) - some seem to enjoy it whereas others are anti?

Not my choice.....

FWIW, i'd go to Bolougne in preference every time...

Especially with kids.... the SeaLife centre there is simply outstanding, and the old town is very lovely for a morning stroll and a relaxed coffee while the kids play in the little park immediately by the cafe and in your complete view at all times.....

Not the impression you would get looking at the news last week, it looked very sinister with people flitting about under cover of darkness, trying to get on lorries etc, I was on a cross channel ferry last half term and didnt notice anything amiss I must say.
Neil - bologne looks a bit crap with that steel plant or smelter or whatever it is in the middle of the harbour, is it near where you moor? - must say the beaches are superb tho.

go right in almost to the bridge.
some fingers are short
marina facilities very good
staff first class
take your own hose ( adaptors available fron the office - double ended hose jointer)

we spent 4 days there 3 yrs ago hot sunny all the time

David,

You are nowhere near the industrial bit.... the marina is right in the heart of the town.

As Roger says, the facilities are first class, and the staff terrific....

We've done both Calais and Bolougne a couple fo times now, and there really isn't any comparison IMHO

That will do me thanks, at least if the weather is c..p (which it wont be this year) we can dump the boat and get home on the train easily.

Another weather forecast not cleared through the Guapacast system /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I would be warey of going into the canal system at Calais and having to moor overnight having gone through the sea lock. You enter a very desolate area and I would certainly not leave the boat at all. You cannot progress from that area until the mobile lock/bridge keeper arrives in the morning to open all the swing/lifting bridges.

The marina, which is in a different direction and through a different sea lock is excellent and the staff are A1. Not sure Calais would appeal to kids.

I have been to Calais for end of May BH each year since 2002 & have not had any problems at all. Personally I prefer it to Boulogne but then I think that is because I have been to Boulogne twice and each time had a boat problem & go to Calais with a bunch of other boats rather than singlehanded!

Gravelines is very nice too.

Calais - gate to Bassin Ouest is still awaiting repair as I understand. There is a sill which holds the water in at LW. Long pontoon on north side by club has nominal 0.5m draft at LW but last year a 35' ketch drawing 1.2m sat there very happily. Was talk of making pontoon wider to get into better depth. Plenty of water further into the marina.

I have a pdf document showing the depths on each of the berths in the marina but dont know how to post it here! PM you e-mail if you want a copy.

What's the position in Graveline for fin keelers?

No problem, you will sink straight in. Excellent place to go.
