Caernarfon Harbour Trust

Debbie,
It IS common for public or council owned harbours & moorings to offer discounts, priority or other benefits to local ratepayers on the basis that they shouldn't "pay twice" for no extra benefit. eg IoM mooring fees are really low for residents.

Good work Major C, is it worth setting up an e-mail group to keep in touch? My e-mail is in my profile. I may be able to find a few others to join on the basis of the more the merrier & the more representative it will be.

I never know now who's replying to who since this new daft web site went live.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's simply not acceptable to have favours for those supposedly, paying & living nearby a marina to get preferantial rates. I was told recently (not far from Canarvon) Ohh you just put this relative's address down to get the discount. It doesn't happen in England, truly its a shock that Wales thinks is acceptable.

Those will be three from the required list:
One by the Gwynedd County Council
Two by the Arfon Borough Council
One by the Ynys Mon Borough Council
One by the Caernarfon Town Council
One by the Welsh Yachting Association
One by the Nature Conservancy Council
One by the Menai Straits Users' Association after consultation with the Port
Dinorwic Private Mooring Licence Holders' Association.

I have learned a lot today about the trust, which I will not repeat on an open forum.

I really do think that we should call on the secretary of state to conduct a public enquiry into them, but then all I want is for the fees to be set at a reasonable level. It's not an inability to pay, but I just don't like paying above the 'normal rate', if there were such a thing for harbour dues.

Mind you, I don't really have much faith in public enquiries either.

I can confirm that I can send a letter to all PD berth holders, but first I am going to send a letter to CHT requesting accounts and answers to questions and then a letter to the secretary of state for Transport, Lord Adonis, but I expect he will be too worried at the moment about losing his unelected job on the 6th May. It would be great if the letter to the SoS was signed by as many berth holders as possible, but I suspect it will be like herding cats.

I have looked at my PM file and it seems I have 700+ messages, when 300 is the maximum. As I want to keep some of them it will take some time to vet them all.

I may appoint some one to give out my email address via PM to interested parties.

OK count me in for that.......... but,
1 Dont call me your secretary
2 I'm not wearing high heels...... again ?

I have recieved my receipt from CHT today along with a bright yellow sticker I can place on the boat to show I have paid............ it does say 2009 though so I wont actually bother!

You see, if you don't pay on time they can't send you the current sticker. As they don't collect harbour dues from passing boats I am not sure what use a sticker is. I've never had a sticker and I have never been asked to pay while I am out and about.

Thanks for the secretarial offer and I don't want to see any bright lippy.

Bring it here, I'll sign it!
Sticker is really useful, it covers a scratch on my starboard window.

2 wrong's = doesn't make it right, I can't answer for schools. but It should be pointed out when things are not fair/right. & errm this is a boating web site, so trying to point out boatie unfairness.

Searush

Searush, new information just in. Can you confirm something?

Going back to your post regarding the toilets and me saying that the harbour dues pay for marks and lights and not pees, I have just been told that the low berthing fees in Victoria Dock includes the harbour dues. Same goes for the river berths and the moorings outside PD.

Is that true?

That would mean that only PD marina and private moorings actually pay a separate bill.

OK, here is the detail from last year's bill for my Pentland on a trot in the River Sieont;

Mooring fees, 1Apr 09-31 Mar 10 49.15/m plus 15% VAT
Harbour Dues,1Apr 09-31 Mar 10 16.55/m plus 15% VAT
Less CHT Registration Fee £50 paid in advance (inc £7.45 VAT) to retain my mooring allocation.

I am asked to pay the £50 Registration Fee up front in the New Year to show that I intend to retain my mooring. Should I decide to crane out, in addition to the 12 month mooring fee, I have to pay an additional £16.13/m plus VAT for winter storage, sitting on the Slate quay.

Anyway, the harbour dues are clearly charged seperately & in addition to the mooring fees, although on the same invoice. I do, of course, pay them both with the same cheque.

Thanks, that means we may get more people interested in questioning where their money is going.

I need the answer to one other question. Why does CHT want to move their boundary to include The Swellies?

They will inherit the Swellie perch, Prices Point light and the lattice towers. I assume that these are currently a burden to the - I assume - Isle of Anglesey County Council.

I have no knowledge, but my common sense thinks like this:

The vast majority of CHT trustees are council employees. They will see those marks as an irrelevant burden on rate payers & will look to offload the costs onto an organisation with surplus cash (due to over high charges) and a direct interest in navigation. They are therefore possibly acting on behalf of their rate payers rather than their members. This could be construed as illegal, except for the simple fact that it does, sadly, make sense.

No proof that this surmise is true or not, but CHT doesn't tell anybody anything anyway.

EDIT; I am sure you will get a fair amount of support from River mooring holders.

I am not paying for the firebrands and pitchforks.
