We're considering buying a bigger motor boat.

We're not interested in blasting around at 20+ knot, which rules out lots of designs, but the looks, style and woodwork on the C Kips appeals.

Any views on: build quality, things to look for, engines (Ford Lehmans), handling, etc, will be greatly appreciated.

Which to go for: the standard or the sedan?

There's quite a few for sale right now, from £60000 to £80000.
With cash available, what would you offer?

What else should we be looking at?

Thanks.

Well My experiences of said C Kips are thus.

44 ft mostly.
With Fords.
8kts cruising speed.
Take a good Sea.
Rock and roll like most displacement vessels.

Safe though.

Fords derivatives, mostly Lehmans.

OK bits of kit.
You are looking at 80's stuff, maybe early 90's at that price bracket?

Hulls are generally OK.
What you see with the timber is what you see.

The areas I would inspect closely.
Stern Glands.
Heat exchangers.
Oil coolers.
For rot/ electrolsis.
The end caps of those bits are suspect to 'rot'.

Stern gland leakage on older mobos of any type need checking.

If I was looking at that type of craft.
I would also check out the 'Coronet' 32ft.

A semi displacement Mobo.
Not driven one.
But by lots of reports a good Sea boat.
Dunno if one will fit Your budgett.
With the 'quick' engines in.
Who knows at the Mo?

I really like the layout of the Coronet though.

Apart from C Kip.
There are other Taiwanese built displacement Trawler Yachts as We call them to be considered.
Island Gypsey.
Etc Etc.
Google.
You will find all sorts.
Then again You might find the Grand Daddy of them all.
Grand Banks.
There is a Forumite on here who has a wooden one.
The C Kips etc are a sort of copy of the Grand Banks.
Don't get a wooden one whatever You do.
Unless you are varnishing Fanatics!.
IMHO look at the 44ft ones.
Loads of room.
Plus they seem to sail better

This is a great time to buy a boat! But don’t limit your self to one type of boat, be open minded? I love trawlers and owned one, but when it comes to buying a new boat put your requirements first rather the boat model?

The boat I bought is a planning hull but at under 10 knots I can achieve fewer than 15 liters per hour!

Planning boats are not expensive it’s the life style and choices that people make!

Swmbo and I just brought the boat up from Kent to London and used under 100 litres in the process by being sensible. We can also be mad and go at 33 knots when a catamaran over tales us, did that for 5 minutes.

In short there are great deals on some boats look around. I did and never looked back, You will get a newer and more modern boats that way,try and think what would the boat you buy fetch in a few years time?

/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Hmm Guess I'm the forumite with the wooden one..........

Don't get a wooden one whatever You do. Unless you are varnishing Fanatics!.

Most of the trawler style boats have lots of brightwork, the newer ones have less and unless you are happy to varnish and keep it looking good this style may not be for you? Maintenance is something that you either do or dont. For me it's part of owning the boat and I enjoy looking after her, ask anybody who has been on board!

As K says they do tend to roll about compared with a planing boat but everything in the marine world is a trade off. On a 40'+ boat it is capable of having stabilisers fitted which will stop the roll.

Trawlers are very comfortable and are normally chosen by people that want to stay on board for long periods and who want a boat for travelling long distance, my "Little" 32 has a range of 1000 miles there isnt any (32') planing boat that will do that!

It boils down to.....

Will I mind travelling slow
Do I want the comfort a trawler can offer
Do I need/want a long distance boat
Will I mind varnishing....

Open mind? Couldn't agree more!

Last week we looked at:

- Freeman 41. Very tempting in many ways, but she was quite tired. Also very limited stowage for our purposes.

- Broom 37. Seemed well built and well loved. Just can't see us owning a boat with so many pink frilly bits (do you really need a silk toilet roll cover?)..... way too camp for us.

Ah the joys of boat hunting!

Thanks for the thoughts.

In my promiscuous boat owning past, I owned a beautiful 30 foot, very traditional, very wooden, gaff cutter for 7 years. The C Kip's wooden 'feel' is very much part of the attraction.

Thats fighting talk /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
My Princess 33 ( sort of planing boat in its early youth) has 2 x 150 gallon tanks,by my reckoning thats 300 gallons.
Last year my average was 1.8 gallons per hour,so lets use that.
Upriver we use even less about mebbe 1.5 gallon an hour.
Lets be cautious and say average speed is 10 mph.Did actually vary twixt 5mph and 17/18 mph.

By my reckoning tank capacity divided by gallons per hour multiplied by average MPH gives me over 1500 miles range.
Are you sure your not towing a pier behind you or summat..........or are my calcs a load of old tosh. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

No I reckon Your right.
Tom has underestimated too.
See He never gets Little Ship out of first gear.
She'll do 1500 no sweat.
Taint the fuel consumption that is an issue with Little Ship.

As We all know.

Tiss the Wine consumption that's The Big Issue /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Great fun trawler yachts, you can make breakfast while underway and sit back and enjoy being at sea.

Be careful of the Teak decks. Can be a nightmare for maintenance and if as most are they are screwed to the deck it means that water has probably got into the deck. The older ones have probably been sanded a few times by now and the screw plugs are probably falling out.

The all have osmosis but it's no big deal, grind it out and fill. Change the glands for PSS seals.

Trust me I have filled the blimming things several times, when full the boat will hardly move. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
The boat was specced by the original owner with oversize fuel and water tanks for long distance cruising.

Yep...........

Figures is figures and as I deal with them every day now, I'll let you into a little secret that you mustn't tell anybody............... you can make them say whatever you want.

Or put another way, I'll buy Kwacker drinks for a week if you can get 1500 miles at 10mph out of a semi planing boat! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
