I feel like gas prices are gonna be low for a while. Considering buying a new boat, don't know if it's good to base my purchasing decision on this. Any thoughts?

I heard an expert on BBC news yesterday predicting that prices will rise again by the end of next year. When I worked in Aberdeen the price went briefly to less than $10 per barrel. Glad I didn't buy a thirsty mobo then.

I took this question to be related to crude oil cost and the cost of resin for GRP. Resin being made from crude oil I understand. Hence cost of resin and so boats went up hugely with the cost of crude years back. I would think the cost of a GRP boat hull will not fall if at all for some time. So just check prices of the boat itself.
Generally for most the cost of fuel is a very small part of sail boat costs and even for a mobo on petrol ultimately only a part of total costs. Although very much related to driect costs of doing miles (ol;d or new boat) compared to cost of ownership. (fixed costs). So ultimately no the price of crude would not affect most peoples decision to buy a new boat. olewill

Given that the OP's username is greatlakesboater I would guess that he is American or Canadian and that gas is an abbreviation for gasoline.

Monitoring crude oil or gas commodity pricing and basing a buying decision thereupon suggests some form of intelligence, logic and rationale. There is no intelligence, logic or rationale in buying a new boat. The only qualification is to be completely mad.

I bought a new boat, yes, I was completely mad, in August 2013. Recreational boating is still in recession, imho, so the buyer has a fair amount of leverage. I negotiated over a few months and was satisfied with the deal. The money pit never stops, though.

You are on the wrong forum. Most people on this one are British or European, (and therefore use the word gas to mean butane/propane etc) and have sailing boats rather than motor boats.

So the price of gas (diesel or petrol in English English) is a rather small consideration when they are intending to use the wind as the motive power. In the UK and Europe, the taxes on diesel/petrol are a larger proportion of the price than they are in the US, so a drop in price is not quite so significant.

If I was thinking of buying a motor boat, then the fuel price drop may have a small effect on my decision, but buying a sailing boat, it would be the least of my worries

I must admit that when I first read your question, I did not notice that you were American, so wondered why the price of butane would make any difference to my boat-buying plans, or perhaps you thought the cost of GRP would be likely to fall with the oil price!
