Has anybody any experience of buying a boat in Italy? I am looking at one and may be visiting it this week and so any practical info would be glady received.

Thanks

John

Hi John /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

two comments
1.survey: there us no regulatory body for surveyors, so it crawls with self appointed "experts" whose level of knowledge is often debatable (as you know, pretty much like in France)

2.if the boat is Italian flagged and above a certain size, the change in ownership should be officially registered through a notarial office, which might add a few hundred euro to the total; imho it is worth investigating beforehand about radiation from italian registry, which could lower the purchase added costs

cheers

Hi
We bought in the NE Adriatic part of Italy last year.
Some info -
Check if there is a broker and that they are registered.
Some brokers are a bit forceful, others fine (we dealt with four ours was great but then again, he was German!).
Send your own surveyor - we used a UK one as thats where the boat was ending up. That way, your insurers may be happier and you may be better covered in the event of an issue.
You may wish to use road transport if it is on the eastern side of the country. If so, check the overall height when on a truck. Ours was too tall for the alpine tunnels so we had to bring her by sea 1500 miles to the S of France before getting her trucked!
Send me a pm with your phone number and I'll gladly give you a call if it would help.
Cheers

Whereabouts in Italy? If N. Adriatic I might be able to help. As Roberto says, boats over 10.5 metres are registered (if Italian boats, of course) and there will be a small fee to have it struck off. Under that length, there's no bureaucracy at all.
